a break here, everybody knows Davey Jones from The Monkey, he's joining us.
I love The Monkey!
Oh my god, hey hey with The Monkey!
We're going to [Gb] catch up with him as we show you some styles as [Eb] well for this [Bbm] New Year.
[Ebm] Everyone we [Ab] meet
Hey [Db] hey with The Monkey
[Gbm] The [Abm] peeps say we [Db] monkey around
[Gb] But we're [Db] too busy singing
[Gb] To [Abm] put [Bb] anybody down
So you gotta [Eb] be friendly
[Ab] About [Eb] what you sing and play
[Ab] We're the [Eb] young generation
[Ab] And we've [C] got something to say
Hey [F] hey with The Monkey
[Eb] We're [Ab] [Fm] shaving razors [Bbm] [Eb] cold
And [Ab] we're listening
[Ab] [Bbm]
[Ab] [Bbm] Welcome back, we are very excited to have a [Cm] music icon in studio with us this [Bb] morning.
Absolutely right, not many have gold records, Emmy awards, winning television shows and the like, even become trivia questions themselves.
But we are joined this [B] morning by Mr.
Davey Jones himself.
You know America was introduced to you really through the [Bb] television program The Monkeys.
Good morning, thanks for joining us.
Hi, it's lovely to be here.
Tell us about that experience that we first got to know you through the television show The Monkeys.
What was that like?
Well I'd been working in New York in theater [Ab] and I was picked up by Columbia Pictures.
And then they kind of were looking for something that I could be part of.
And I auditioned for Wacky Ship in the Army, you [B] know sort of Hogan's Heroes.
I almost was Robin in [C] Batman.
Is that right?
Really?
I didn't want to be wearing [Bb] those tights.
But then The Monkeys idea [E] came along basically because of a hard day's night.
The Beatles, [C] Americans answer to the idea.
So we filmed the show and it was quite [Bb] an event because none of us had ever met before.
Oh, you guys were such [C] great friends on the show.
Well you know it's like an audition process much the same as American Idol or X Factor.
Where you go and there was 400 kids showed up and they had an ad in the paper.
And everybody came.
I obviously was there at the very beginning conception of the whole idea.
[B] But it was much the same like in any [C] business you know.
You get put together and it works and you click and it's attractive [B] to the viewer.
Okay, there's that [Bb] iconic scene with you guys walking, the big walk and the whole thing.
And there's a San Diego connection to this.
So tell us about this.
Well yeah, you know in fact last night I stayed over at the Del Coronado.
It's where we shot The [G] Monkeys pilot.
[E] And that running back and forth on the [Am] beach [B] like the little birds do was all at the Del as they call it.
And it was just like when I went there yesterday I got like goose bumps.
Because it had been many years since I'd been there, about 45 actually.
[Bb] And I saw that [Fm] metal elevator and the [Abm] little man standing, I think it was the same guy standing at the elevator.
And I thought well we're both looking pretty good at this [N] particular point.
Yeah, it was quite a happy memory because it was all part of that connection.
You know during those days there was Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson.
And many other sort of people that were involved around our little project.
And so we got a lot of input from a [C] lot of people.
It wasn't just [Eb] like the studio or [Bm] Mickey, Mike, Peter and myself.
It was a collaboration of many, many, many ideas that really were sort of [Ab]
stolen or plagiarized [N] from the Beatles of Hard Day's Night.
You know in another San Diego connection, you're very much into thoroughbred racing.
You've even appeared at Del Mar, your horse has.
Talk about your interest in thoroughbreds and horses.
Well you know when I left school as a 14 year old actually, I went straight into the stables as an apprentice jockey.
It's been with me all my life.
I've got horses now.
I've just bred some beautiful horses last couple of seasons and ready to go this year or next year.
Day after tonight.
And I'm looking forward to competing.
You know it's very difficult these days because you're running [E] against all kinds of thoroughbreds that are really unknown quality.
[B] But I had one experience at Del Mar a couple of years ago.
I ran my horse Indian Town Jones in the 67th running of the Del Mar Handicap.
I was standing on the shed row and there's a little kid with his dad and mom and I got some carrots and I gave them to him.
And when you're on the track, you're just like everybody else.
Nobody cares who you are.
It's about the horses.
So I gave these [N] carrots to the little kid.
He gave them to the horse.
His father came over to before he left the stable.
He shook my hand and when he left, he put a 20 in my hand.
He says thank you very much.
So unknown and anonymous.
That's what the horses do to me.
You've been so busy [Bb] touring with your fellow Monkeys.
Yeah, I've been on tour a lot all over the place.
We did 46 concerts this past year and we were at the Royal Albert Hall and we were talking about earlier.
And we ended up at the Greek Theater and it was very successful.
And it's something that might continue this summer once again.
So tonight you're back here in San Diego.
You're here for a purpose.
It's the Firefighters Ball.
You're the headliner [N] for this.
Well, you know, Sonny, I think the headlines are basically.
I think it's those guys that do so much.
And it's not just standing on the corner with a welly, with a rubber boot, you know, collecting funds in order to upgrade equipment and upgrade.
I think it's an awareness.
I mean, you just have to look at the news right now and see what's going on in, I think, in Hollywood.
Yeah, well, the Warriors.
So this [E] is a very treacherous thing.
I mean, this is a very brave [N] thing.
And I know my wife is very much looking forward to going to [Bb] the ball tonight.
I [B] know all the girls have a little soft spot for those firemen. Don't [Bb] they?
We all dreamed of becoming firemen.
But we ended up where we were.
I'm still [B] dreaming about it.
At the convention center, we just had some information on the [Bb] screen for everybody.
If we can just [B] shoot that up real quick.
7 o'clock [A] tonight.
It goes until 1 o'clock [E] in the morning.
And for information, just go to [B] firefightersball.org.
And I'm sure you can purchase some tickets on the website as well.
Very [Am] good.
Very nice.
It is such [Bb] an honor to have you in studio.
Davie Jones, we've been following your career for many, many years, decades, really.
Well, I think this is really refreshing.
I like your ideas and everything you've got.
And it's a collage of many things.
And it's not the same repetitive [B] stuff.
Okay, we hear the news and that's it.
And we hear it again for the next three hours.
We're having fun.
It's New Year's Eve today.
We're having great time.
Everybody's happy and fresh.
Yeah.
Yeah, I love it.
You know, the fashion.
You know, the band.
I can't wait to get out there. Stick around.
Maybe you can sing with the band for us.
It's almost like Ed Sullivan once again.
And here again, you know, 1964, that was the first [Am] TV show I did was the Ed Sullivan [Bb] show.
Was it?
The same night the Beatles [B] were on.
That night.
Which put me into that mode of, hey, look at all these [N] girls.
Yeah, yeah.
There's something to this.
I'm going to start my own band.
I'm going to have my own band.
We'll call it the Moonkies.
How's that?
And that was it.
Really, honestly, the same night was interesting.
Yeah.
The best, best I've ever taken.
I watched them sing six tunes and I thought, [C] my goodness gracious.
And, well, I'm from England.
I think I can do that.
You can do that.
All right, [Gb] we're going to have you back, right?
You're from Manchester.
Yeah, from Manchester.
We want to [E] have you back when you come back for [N] the races.
Yeah.
Hopefully, come back in the studio.
You can show your horses with us.
Give us some tips on that.
Yeah, well, my father used to say it's a mug's game, gambling.
Give me a tip, Daddy, says don't wash your woolies in hot water.
I like that.
Everybody, Davey Jones, great to have you. Thank you.
Thanks for being here.
Lovely to be here.
Tonight, the Firefighters Ball.
Down at the Convention Center, 7 o'clock until 1 o'clock in the morning.
Thanks so much.
My pleasure.
Appreciate it.
Thank you.
Hey, I hope you're hungry this morning because you've got to get ready to experience [Bbm] some
delicious [F] Mexican food from the restaurant Bolillo Tortas.
[Bbm] That's coming up as well.
You hungry, Davey?
I'm hungry.
Looks good, huh?
Yeah.
I'm hungry [Ab] enough for Mexican food.
All [Gb] right, we'll have that plus [Bb] much more.
Stay with us.
