G'day, Nigel from Sax School here.
Today we're going to talk about Mo' Better Blues.
It's a great little melody, very, very simple melody,
but a good fun one to learn.
And I'm going to talk about the melody in this,
just the melody notes first of all.
But if you go and have a look at the full lesson on Sax School,
we'll actually talk about the solo as well,
I'll give you some clues about how you can start making up your own melodies
and your own improvisations over this tune.
And also there's a little backing track you can use to practice along with as well.
So let's get started straight away with the melody.
And the first note is [G] like this, it sounds like this.
[Eb] [Bb] [N]
Okay, so we're in the key of Ab on the tenor saxophone,
which means we've got four flats, right?
We've got Bb, we've got Eb, we've got Ab,
we've got G sharp, right?
And we've got Db.
Db is the same as C sharp, okay?
No fingers.
So that first phrase, I'm using the octave key,
and I'm going Eb, F, Ab, Bb, C.
Now it seems like there's lots of flats in here,
but actually it's the same ones over and over again.
So it's actually, when you, just be patient with it,
you'll get your head around it, because it's not that complicated.
So Eb, F, Ab, Bb, C.
And the next line is Bb, C, Bb, Ab, F.
Alright?
Ba, B, ba, ba, ba.
So we've gone up, and now we're going back down again, okay?
So let's put those two together.
Here we go.
One, two.
[Bbm]
[F] One, two.
[N] Ah!
Okay, cool.
The next line is the same as that one we just did.
Bb, C, Bb, Ab, F.
Shall we play that?
[Ab] [Eb] And then the last phrase,
that's right, we're at the end already, right?
There's [Bb] only four phrases.
The last phrase is [N] just slightly different.
It's Bb, C, Ab, F, Ab.
[Bb]
[Ebm] [B] [N] Okay, so let's do a quick recap.
So the first one is E flat F, A flat B flat C.
That's the first one.
The second one is B flat C, B flat A flat F.
The third one, same as that one, B flat C, B flat A flat F.
And then the last one is B flat C, A flat F, A flat.
So let's play all four of those together, nice and steady.
So we start on beat 3, so we're going to go 1, 2, and then we play on beat 3.
Here we go, 1, 2.
[Eb] [Bbm]
[F] [Eb] [F]
[Eb]
[F] [Gb] [N]
And then we can play the whole melody again, so we've got that pick up again.
E flat F, A flat B flat, and we're back to the top again.
So let's go from that pick up, and we'll play all the way through the melody line [Eb] one more time.
Here we go, 1, 2.
[Bbm]
[Eb]
[F]
[Gb] [N] Ok, cool, so those are all the notes in Mo Better Blues.
Now if you pop over to Sax School and have a look at the full lesson, I'll actually show you how to play
over the solo, how to improvise, I'll show you some tips on what notes you can [Ab] use,
and how you can start building up your [N] own solos, your own improvisations over this tune.
Because it's a great tune to get started with improvising.
Hope you enjoyed working through that lesson.
Keep practicing hard, check out the other lessons I've got available as well,
and please leave me a comment and let me know how you're getting on.
See you next time.
