Alright everybody, hey, Steve Arava here [C] with my good friend [Eb] and extraordinary bassist,
[N] Rico Espanol.
We're going to be talking about his basses, the basses that he plays,
Oliva [A] Coppolo basses, and a little bit about himself too.
He's got a strong internet presence,
[Eb] has a bass shop online, and we'll talk about that later, but play a little bit man.
Let's hear a little bit of the Oliva Coppolo, LG5, correct?
LG5, so [C] it is.
[Eb]
[F] [D] [C]
[G]
Nice, nice.
Well, what can you tell us about this bass?
Well, it's an Oliva Coppolo [N] LG5, and it is a 5, an LG is, you know, Jimmy [E] Coppolo, Oliva
Coppolo, they've got a lot of [Eb] models, [A] and the LG5 is a 60's version of, you know, it's
pretty much specced out to a [B] 60's Fender.
Okay, with the [Bm] spacing, pickup [Bb] spacing?
Spacing meaning it's a [Eb] 60's, you know, 60's spacing, and there, that's pretty [C] much.
And the bodywork?
[B]
So yeah, the pickups [G] are Jimmy Coppolo, Oliva Coppolo,
[Ab] [Eb] in his [B] shop, and the electronics
are [C] also made, you know, by [F] them, [G] so
Active, [B] active electronics.
[Bb] [Gb]
[E] [B]
And there, [G] it's volume, volume, this is the neck pickup volume, this is the bridge pickup
volume, this is your tone control, in a standard jazz bass, you got a tone control, and this
is your EQ right [A] here, active [Em] EQ.
Treble, [D]
my [D] strings are really, are really old.
[Gb] It gives it that old school sound, for sure, [E] it sounds killer.
I know, I hate, [Bm] I don't like those [A] strings.
[Gb] This is [B] your bass right here, so treble, it's an [A] active 2-band EQ, and there, and then the
body is, you know, this [F] body is an old piece [G] of spalted alder.
Okay, spalted alder, okay, [F] cool.
It's just, it's like [B] old, decayed alder, that's why [Eb] you got all the figuring, but it's, you
know, [G] it doesn't have any top, it's a solid body, it's not, this is the back, so there,
and then this right here is, you know, where the branch [B] was.
Nice, the notch, [D] alright, cool.
And then you have the clear pickguard.
Clear, yeah, clear, I just, you know, chose to put the clear [A] pickguard on it, and this
one I had Jimmy put this on, it's a [Bb] ramp, you know, all my other basses [F] have ramps,
[G] so just for technique [F] wise and all that, it's got a ramp.
[G] And the fingerboard, this is Brazilian rosewood, it's an old [Bm] piece of Brazilian rosewood, and
the neck, it's got binding right [G] here, and, you know, the neck is a, you know, it's a
one piece maple.
[Bm] Okay.
So, that's pretty much what the bass is, man, it's like, you know, any other Fender, that's straightforward.
Cool, now, and then, when it comes to actually using it for performance, this bass, fill
all those, [B] this, all these, okay.
This bass just does it all, you know, when I first got it, [Bb] I got this bass in, [G] you know,
first, January 1.
Okay.
[Eb] Jimmy finished it on.
January 1, 2000.
January 1, 2000,
[Ab] [B] I got it on New Year's Day, and, you know, I intentionally wanted to play
this, you know, mostly like the pop, punk rock, [Gm] R&B, and, you [C] know, it does the job,
[G] and, yeah, this [A] bass does the job, and, you know, also for recently, I just, I played
it with, [E] you know, I've been playing it on my jazz [G] fusion gigs, and, yeah, this bass
just, you know.
Fits the bill.
Yeah.
Cool.
So, it does [A] it all.
Nice, alright, cool.
[B] Aliva Coppola.
Aliva Coppola.
[B]
We can talk about that.
On another [Bm] time, yeah, we'll stick with the jazz [Em] bass, yeah.
I got a P bass, yeah, there.
Excellent.
[Gb] Alright, cool.
It's [E] just, you know, for vintage, for [Bm] a vintage fender, you know, it's got the whole vintage
vibe going on, and, yeah, they're good stuff.
Jimmy.
[Bb] Just recently moved, I didn't mean to interrupt, but just recently moved [B] from the west, from
the east coast.
From the east coast, yeah.
To Upland, California.
He is in Upland, [Bb] right, very accessible to [A] all.
Cool guy, very nice guy.
Awesome.
