One day my telephone rang and it was Brian and he said don't later and I said, yeah, okay, and he said
The conversation went on.
I thought what do you want?
He said well, I've been thinking he said
Do you fancy?
Forming a band and your band.
I said well, I don't as it [Gb] happens.
I said [Ab] I'm gonna give it another three [Eb] months for this band
[N] And see what because we had a record deal nearly happening.
So he said
Yeah, that's what I thought you'd say he said
They fired you last night
And I said pardon he said well
The reason I was given there was a meeting behind your back and the manager said he's lost
He's got no interest in the band.
He doesn't take it seriously anymore, which nothing could have been further from the truth
[Ab] So he said look I don't want to stick around there.
He said
So he said you're out anyway, and I was fired from this band and he said let's just go for a new band
and I said well
Okay, I mean I'm my options I've got some choice I'd been brought up on bands like
three piece bands loved the yard birds where Jeff Beck and the who
Jimmy Hendrix experience cream
You know all those good three-piece and you've got to be it was my kind of dream to form a four-piece band
three musicians a lead singer and
He said oh
He said I said what about a bass player?
No, he said well Stevie from the Countdowns and
I remembered the name because in Gillan
Said [E] to me at some stage
He was in a former band to manage and he said the guy I want is Stevie Stevie Priest from the Countdowns
Great bass player and great lead singer
[A]
[B] [Eb] [E] [A]
[Gb] [E] To me
And I bumped in for one said I loved your last record and I [Db] just say I'm an employee to [B] my teeth [E] I
Found these two site.
You [D] said look.
What are you doing?
I said well
It's getting a bit frustrating actually and he said look.
[N] I've got a pile of demos.
He said I've got these two new writers and
he said I've had this song around for about a year and
he said he
Just come up and take a listen, and I'll play you all the all the demos.
I've got
Salsa, well don't tell me you know because he said this is a hit it's a hit record
I said when you play them to me don't tell me which one it is and he played about 10 demos and I said
Well, it's funny funny
So we're talking around about the little Willie period which was
June 72 and I said
It was very tongue-in-cheek.
I said let's go for it.
And so we slapped the makeup on and as a joke
Stevie wool hot pants which were like the women's fashion, you know
he wore these hot pants and have opened almost like a
bra type top and stack silver boots and everything and
Little did I know when I said that what a monster I was creating [E] because their record went in a ball
We made blockbuster, which is a little bit away from the normal kind of
Commercial record that one would make
Like I remember saying to my channel you sure about this.
He said this is gonna be a smash
And he was I mean it was and that's when [N] we were it was a very big period in 73
You know what?
I call the glam rock era for the band
we recorded the original desolation Boulevard in a week and
It was a bit of amateur quite a bit of our material and
Mike came in and he listened to the songs and there's a recording he came in the middle of the week and he said
come up the song turn it down and
He was trying to write as the suite would write only in a commercial way
I mean he's bending over backwards to try and do that and
For various reasons it wasn't really acceptable.
I mean it was a successful single in Europe, but
The BBC didn't particularly fancy it
In fact they banned it they said we won't use that because the lyric for God's [G] sake and that's why
[A] [D]
[G] [A] Well, [D] I thought I [G] kind of had the chorus in mind [Gb] anyway and I [G] thought about the lyric
you know, I want to place the action [A] and
[D]
I
Sat down [Dm] with Andy I think we're on the bus and I said I got this idea of the [D] chorus and
We developed [G] it from there [Ab] [Dm] [N] and
I think I I came up with the first so you think you'll take
another part of me I
Came across the original lyric that I'd written down.
That's an ongoing and I crossed it out and then think you'd take another piece of me
to satisfy your intellectual
Need greed, whatever and
And of course that was a starting point and the whole thing just evolved from there we sat down and we composed the song
there was a lot of
Aggression that came through but also you've got that wonderfully
Commercial chorus.
It's a three chord chorus
You know, I think it's safe to say this now that Brian had a drink problem
That he didn't he didn't realize he had and
It's a sickness alcoholism is a sickness
and I think it it culminated in
One very bad experience in one of the the dates we did it was Birmingham, Alabama and
I think Brian was taking some kind of medication or I don't know.
I don't but
We did a show we were on the Bob Seger
to and he did he
Didn't know where he was
I mean it was and there were a lot of record company people there and it was all hell broke loose after that
There are a lot of bands around that are trying to sound like us and I know this for a fact there are I mean
I've talked to producers and that's why people keep coming forward wanting to get the band back together
They would need that hunger and that desire to prove themselves to be the best band in their field again
The conversation went on.
I thought what do you want?
He said well, I've been thinking he said
