[B] [A]
[C] [D] [A] We're here in LA, in Michael Schumann's rehearsal space, with one of your bands, the Mini Mansions.
[D]
What's that band like?
How does that sound?
What kind of vibe do you have?
[E] It's pop music.
It's really what we like to call it, or what other people like to call it.
A lot of people refer to us, [G] that we sound like The Beatles.
And gear-wise?
This is more the Mini Mansions set-up.
In Queens I use an old SPT, an 8x10, and I recently [D] added a P-Stick [Ab] 360.
So I have those both simultaneously.
It's not even about loudness, it's actually getting two separate tones and blending them together to create a new tone.
I use the same rig I've used since I was 16.
Once you find something that you love, it's hard to get rid of it.
So you started out simply because you couldn't find a bass player that played the way you wanted it to sound?
Yeah, basically.
So what about now?
Do you consider bass your main instrument now?
I'd say now, yeah.
I mean, I write on guitar, it's hard to write on bass, but bass is my thing now, for [A] sure.
[G]
[N] So how did you get the Queens of the Stone Age gig?
Actually, my band Wires on Fire did a record with Alan Yohannes and Natasha Schneider.
So they produced a record when we were about 20, or 19 or 20.
And then Al was in Queens.
And a couple of other friends that were mutual friends said, I guess this is the dude.
So you play drums here, and then you play in Queens of the Stone Age, and you play bass.
I play bass, yeah.
[Abm] So is bass your first instrument?
Yeah, I mean, guitar was my first instrument.
And then I think when I was 14 or 15, I started this other band and [B] wanted to play bass.
Did you have some heroes growing up, some guys you thought were cool, or bands?
What's your reference for?
I guess I was raised on The Beatles.
So McCartney's
I mean, he's my favorite bass player.
Zeppelin became another big one, and John Paul Jones became
Kind of shifting from
I mean, obviously Paul plays both rock [Eb] and more [D] melodic things.
But listening to Zeppelin got me playing more like a rock bass player.
And that's actually when I first started playing bass.
So what are the plans for now?
Are you going out touring again?
Right now I'm home, working on a couple records.
Busy.
Really busy.
