I wrote this one in [Ab] Nashville with a friend of mine [E] named Jennifer Hansen.
And we sat down and wrote it, talked for probably two or three hours.
It was the very first time we'd ever written together.
[D] And for both of us, this song was very personal.
We both had someone specific in mind that we [A] were talking to, I guess, when we wrote it.
And some days you just have those days [Bb] where, yeah,
that's a song that is very much like a journal.
You're just kind of bleeding on the page, as they say.
You're just kind [A] of [Ab] expressing something.
And [G] so we wrote the song and recorded a little work [Bb] tape of it, just a little piano vocal.
[A]
And a few weeks later, kind of thankfully by one of the great mysteries of the [D] universe,
[Bb] Kelly Clarkson ended up hearing it [A] and recording it and putting it on her album [C]
[E] called Stronger.
And [G] the name of the song is called [Eb] You're Breaking Your Own Heart.
[E] And it's the very last song on the album.
It just barely made it on there somehow [A] magically.
And I'm still trying to figure out how that happened.
But she sings it about five octaves higher [C] and much better and louder than I do.
[Gm] But this was the original little acoustic [G] version.

Too [Gbm] many tears, too many [G] falls.
[Em] It's [D] easier here behind [G] these walls.
[A] But you don't have to walk in the shadows where life is [C] so hard.
You're breaking your own [G] heart, taking your own heart down this lonely road.
[D] You say you just [G] want love, but when it's close enough, you just let it [C] go.
[Am] Everything you've been most afraid [Em] of, you've been doing from the [C] start.
You're breaking your own [D]

You're [C] breaking your own [Am] heart, taking your [G] own heart.

You're never gonna [D] find that [Em] new beginning [G]
if you stay right [C] where you are.
