Michael Kamen on composing Robin Hood score chords
Start Jamming...
[Abm] Very high on [G] the part.
E, F, A, [C] B, ring.
I need a [A] G to D [Fm] pickup as if you're in bar 110.
You probably don't know [Cm] his name, but you definitely know his music.
Michael Kamen has composed musical scores for some of Hollywood's most successful films,
among them Lethal Weapon and Die Hard.
The music is the last ingredient that can help to extract the emotions from the characters.
If they're falling in love, you gush for them, and if they're [Gb] crying, you weep silently for them.
And you
that's why it's called [F] underscore.
It's more like [E] [A] underlining an emotion.
[C] Here we go.
[Fm]
Capturing the emotion required [C] some dedicated [F] musicians, 110 [D] to be exact.
[C] Here, they are creating a romantic feel for a pivotal scene between Robin and Maid Marian.
[G]
[C]
[G] The [C] basic theme is really simple.
It's just
[G] [F]
[G]
[C]
very rarely gets any more [G] involved than that.
I play it on [F] this, and then put it on score and turn it into [C] musical instruments.
[G] [Dm]
[C] [Dm]
[C] It's big.
It's [Dm] full of heroics and power and real compassion.
[C] I've [Dm] carried an idea of who Robin Hood is in my mind since I was six,
[N] so that's a pretty strong vision to have musically.
Robin Hood!
Let's go listen to it.
[E] So this is how I do it.
[G] They give me the picture [C] with these bar of timings underneath it.
That's how I know when I'm supposed to be in, when I'm supposed to stop, and when I'm supposed to hit something.
The orchestra loves playing flat [D] out for long [C] periods of time.
[E] They'll play anything, but they [Am] love just running.
[G] It's like [Am] getting on a horse and galloping, so this is what it feels like [G] for [Am] us on the [D] [Am] floor.
[G] [F] [Am]
[G] [Am]
[Dm] [G] [N] There's this lovely episode where Maid Marian follows Robin Hood into his camp in the woods.
He sees her off by the lake.
Robin asks her for two favors.
She says, yes, okay, I'll do the first one.
And he says, I need you to get a message.
Will you do this for the king?
And she looks at him hard and she goes
I'll do it for you.
And we've been building [D] it up, [Ab] pages and pages and pages of music.
And [C] finally she kisses him.
And that's where the score turns black with notes and everybody [F] goes
This [D] [C]
[G]
[C] [F]
[G]
is [C] a work of love.
This has come from the heart.
This is something that I [G] really, really care about.
Music is a real substance.
[C] It's a very powerful [F]
substance.
And it's got to [C] be taken seriously.
I guess I was [G] in love with Maid Marian.
[C] Just looking at [Dm] Kevin Costner giving her a big kiss and thinking, oh [C] man, that's [Dm] as close as I'll get to her.
I love that.
