Martin's 2019 Modern Deluxe Series acoustic guitars hands on #NAMM2019 chords

[E] [Em] Hey, this is Chris for Guitar.com and I'm here at NAMM 2019 with Fred Green from Martin
who's going to talk us through the new Modern Deluxe [G] series.
Hey, thanks Chris.
So what I have here in my hands is the new Modern Deluxe.
This is an OM-28 and what's really different about this guitar this year is we've incorporated
a lot of technology and a lot of things that we probably have only used in the custom shop
up to this point.
So this is the first time we're putting them into more of a traditional line.
[B] This [A#] guitar is really meant to [G#] replace our vintage line [N] that was sitting in between the
standards and the authentic series prior to this.
So what's really different about it is it's using a titanium truss rod, so it's a two-way
adjustable titanium truss rod and when you pick the guitar up you can really feel it.
It is much lighter.
It's about 64% lighter than the steel two-way rod that we had in before.
We're also using Evo gold frets.
Now what's special about these gold frets is first off, they're not really gold.
It's really just a copper alloy within the fret and if you talk about a regular fret
like our nickel frets on our traditional guitars, they run about a 200 on the hardness scale.
A stainless steel fret is about 300 on the hardness scale.
These fit right in between that, so it's about a 250, so they are firmer than our traditional frets.
They'll last longer.
The gold is not just a coating.
It goes all the way through, so as you start to wear the fret down, over time it will remain gold.
It's really closer to a bronze in color.
What else is unusual about the guitar is the neck profile.
This neck profile we actually took off a 1931 OM45 that we had in our museum and we were
all playing it and we were like, wow, man, I just love this neck.
Why does it feel so good?
Well, after we measured it, it was quite a bit asymmetrical, which makes sense.
Back in 31, somebody's hand shaping that neck.
They weren't running them off CNC machines.
So this neck had, the guy had just maybe taken a little bit more off one side than another.
So as we played, we were like, man, we really like the way that feels, so let's go ahead
and take that neck, recreate it.
Well, we didn't realize the problems that that might create.
One of the issues [Fm] was [F#m] our current fingerboards are actually thicker today [C#] than they were
back in 31.
So when we [F#] put a modern fingerboard on this, the neck [A] profile changed and we didn't like
the way it felt.
[E] So we had to go back and actually do an authentic 1931 thickness [N] fingerboard to match up with
the Evo frets and to get [A#] that neck so it really felt [C] the way we wanted it to feel.
[F#] Now as a way to try to [E] make this guitar continue to sound better, not just play [B] better, but
to sound better, we [E] went with a Torrified Sitka spruce [A] top using Adirondack braces.
First time we've matched those two together in a production [C#] guitar, a non-custom shop [B] guitar.
[A] We're holding it all together with fish [F#] glue just on the top.
[A] [F#] Underneath this bridge, [G#] there's a carbon fiber sandwiched bridge plate [N] that sits beneath this.
So it's two pieces of carbon fiber with a piece of Torrified Adirondack sandwiched in between.
And then we're holding the strings [E] in with liquid metal bridge pins, these are Red Dot
liquid metal pins that we're introducing this year.
The combination of the pins and the bridge plate together [N] boost the dB on this guitar
from 3 to 5 dB over a regular OM-28.
So there's just a lot of technology happening inside the guitar, a lot going on to make
it sound better, to make it play better.
[F#] Being a deluxe, we've [Em] added the Pearl logo at the top, [B] Pearl side dots on here.
So we wanted people to be able to recognize when they [A] walk into their local store that
this guitar is different, I need to give this a ride and see how it feels.
And I don't think they'll [B] be disappointed.
So when are they available [E] and what's the price point?
[F#m]
They're available today, [C#] they should be shipping this month, right here after the show.
The price [E] points will be anywhere from around $4,000 up.
So they'll sit [B] just above the current standard model.
So [E] this deluxe OM-28 will be just above our [A] traditional OM-28.
Thanks very much [C] Fred.
Thank you.
