Hello, Tony here from Music Villa.
Here today to compare the D-28 by Martin and the D-18 by Martin.
[G#] Which one [Em] will you take to your underground shelter when doomsday comes?
I don't know, but we're going to find out today.

Before we [F] start, I really want you to click the link below and sign up for the acoustic letter.
Stop digging your tunnels, click the link, and you'll get all sorts of cool pictures, videos,
price lists of all cool custom one-of-a-kind guitars we get from Martin, Taylor, and Gibson.
Now let's compare [Am] these two [F#] very common [N] Martin models.
If you're out there in the world of shopping for an acoustic guitar and you're looking at Martins,
these are going to be two models you will most certainly run into.
The D-28 over here and the D-18 over here.
These two models are the same shape, but they do have some differences that impact the tone significantly.
Both have Sitka spruce tops, but the big difference between the two,
the D-28 has solid rosewood back and sides while the D-18 has solid mahogany back and sides.
Mahogany is a little bit more porous, a little bit more warm sounding.
Rosewood is a more dense wood, so it's going to reflect a little bit more, have a little bit more bass,
a little bit more articulation in it.
Some other quick differences that you'll notice.
The bracing on the D-28 [Fm] is 5 16ths inch [G] in the standard X placement.
The [F] new bracing pattern on the D-18 for 2012 is also 5 16ths, but it's scalloped and forward shifted,
increasing the bass response a little bit.
[G] The nut width on the D-18 is 1 3 quarter.
The nut width on the D-28 is 1 11 16ths.
The D-18 has more of a vintage look with the open gear tuners and the silk screen decal on the headstock.
And the Martin D-28 has more of a modern feel with the gold foil decal on the Grover tuners.
Which one sounds better?
I think they both sound pretty darn good.
But, [G#] let's have a listen and see which one you like.
