[C#m] What a great [B] song, but what a [E] great voice.
That of course [B] was Toy Soldiers by Martika,
which went number [C#m] one around the world,
double [A#] platinum here in Australia.
And [A] Martika is heading here in July
[B] as part of the Totally [C#m] 80s Tour.
And she joins us now [B] from Ohio.
Martika, [E] wonderful to see you [C#] this morning.
Hi, thank you so much for having me on the show.
Hello everybody.
Mwah.
We have a lot of fans here.
Now let's start with Toy Soldiers.
There was a massive hit for you in the 80s.
And what a lot of people won't know
is that Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas
and Jennifer Love Hewitt feature on the song.
Is that right?
Well, yes, Fergie's definitely singing on that.
You know, she and I grew up on Kids Incorporated together,
our [B] TV show.
And so when I needed [C#m] some kids,
I had just the right friends [A#] to call,
my musical [A] buddies from back in the day.
[B] And Fergie [C#m] turned out to be the biggest star
I knew she would [B] be someday.
[E] So yeah, that is [B] very true.
Following in your footsteps [C#m] indeed.
And a few years ago, Eminem sampled the song
for his hit, like Toy Soldiers.
Let's have a quick reminder of [E] that.
[B] What [C#m]
[A#] [A] [B] [C#m]
[G#m] [E] [B] did you think of his version, Martika?
[C#m]
[F#] [A] Yeah, I love it.
It's so cool.
[B] I'm just very flattered [C#m] that he sampled me.
So yeah, big fan.
Did you know it was gonna happen?
I mean, [A] did somebody give you a heads up like,
hey, there's this guy and he's gonna sample your song?
[G#m] [C#m]
Yeah, I did.
I got the call, you know, his people call my people
kind of thing, you [B] know, and I got a call
and said, Eminem wants to sample [A] Toy Soldiers.
And [E] first I thought somebody was playing [C#] a hoax on me.
I'm like, one of my friends is definitely, you know,
trying to, you know, punk me or something,
but now it was true.
And so, yeah, [D] just love it.
So cool.
We're gonna play a snippet now of another big hit.
This is my favorite, Love That Will Be Done.
[Em] [D] I can no longer run, no I'm running.
Love that will be [G] done.
Love that will [D] be done.
That's a perfect pop song.
And a really beautiful music clip to go with it, I reckon.
You co-wrote [Em] that with Prince Martika.
Tell us a bit about that collaboration
and [A] how it came about.
[D]
Yeah, [G] so, well, it was basically based on a prayer
that I wrote in my notebook [E] one night before I met him.
And [D] so when we got together to make music,
I just [G] gave him some lyrics and that was in there.
And then next thing you know,
he turned it into a Love That Will Be Done [D] hymn.
So just still to this day, I can't believe that, you know,
we have like our Love That Will Be Done child.
It's really pretty nice.
I'm so happy when I hear it still.
He did just tour Australia and the rumors are
that he performed it when he was down here.
[G] That's awesome.
I'm so [Bm] glad that he's singing Love That Will Be Done.
It's really cool, man.
It's such a pretty song.
It goes in line with the spiritual beliefs.
Oh, that's fabulous.
Now you surprised a lot of people
and some people don't know about this,
but you actually just walked away from the music business.
You were just 22 years old.
That's a very assured thing to do.
What prompted you to quit?
No, I don't know.
I mean, I just think it was youth
and you do crazy things when you're young.
[B]
I think I was just burned [G] out so young.
I was so overwhelmed and I think, you know,
[E] it kind of all freaked me out.
It was probably [G] a case of too much, too soon.
I guess I just really maybe didn't [Dm] feel like I could do
[C] such a [Dm] huge [E] platform and voice in the world, you know,
[Dm] justice and I just felt like a responsibility or [G] something,
you know, to be like a role model to young people,
all this and that.
So I think I just [C#] maybe didn't feel like
[G#m] I could [C#] do it right or something.
I just needed a [Fm] break, man.
I [A#m] should have taken like a few months off
and made another record,
[F] but I got [A] distracted by life [E] and next thing you know.
What have you been doing, Martika?
What have you been doing [A#] in subsequent years?
[N]
So, you know, aside from music is always like,
I'm so connected to music.
I can never stop being connected to that,
but I also have had an amazing personal life
and just been, I've been married for like 15 years
and we're so happy and my husband and I
had a beautiful dog.
I was raised with pets, you know,
but this was like the first animal that I was able to raise
from day one all the way through.
He just passed away last year.
So I spent a lot of time with him.
It was just really an amazing experience.
Most of my dogs ended up with other family members
because I always had to go away or whatever,
go to work on tour.
So, you know, and just still creative
and like my goal of being like the greatest housekeeper
in the world, man.
Well, Martika, we're glad you can leave the housework alone
for a month or two and come down to Australia.
You have a lot of fans here who are dying to see you.
You'll be in the country as part of the Totally 80s Tour.
Head to our website for details.
Great to talk to you at last.
Gorgeous lady.
Thank you so much, you guys.
And I can't wait to get there.
Bye.
That's July.
We gotta wait till July.
