Hello again, my name is John [B] Mann.
I'd like to show you another man.
This one is an SEM5.
[N] SEM for solid electric mandolin.
It is a solid body.
It's a five [G#] string which is tuned EADG
[C] with a low C string.
It has a [Em] curly [N] maple.
This is a nice one piece curly maple top.
It's mahogany back and sides with a neck through construction.
My [C] five strings, I use a 14 and a half inch scale which helps alleviate a lot of five strings.
We'll have a what they call a floppy C string.
There's just [C#m] not enough tension on [Em] a C string at
13 and [F#] 7 eighths which is a standard mandolin [E] scale to keep that C string [C] tight enough.
See, [G] it's nice and tight on a 14 and a half inch but [Am] the E string is [E] still
[D]
[F#] not too tight.
So I [Am] found that to be the [Em] perfect compromise for scale length on a five string.
It has [N] two pickups, two DiMarzio Pro Trax.
It's [C] [B] wired to a master [C]
volume control.
[F#] It has a [C] tone control, master tone.
On the tone control, I usually actually
on this model [C#] it doesn't do series parallel.
It just splits both of them [F#] at the same time to make
[C]
two single [Cm] coils.
[B] [C] [F] You have two single coils or two hummers [F]
or [Bm] I do have a [N] selector switch here that
selects either pickup or both.
Up [C] position is just the neck pickup.
Middle is both pickups
and down is just the bridge pickup.
That's the electronics.
[F] This one has a Macassar
ebony fingerboard which is standard.
This is a standard model, one of the SEM5.
Macassar ebony fingerboard with banjo size frets and 12 inch radius.
Gold hardware.
This is my
own wraparound tailpiece that I make out of aircraft aluminum and have them plated.
[A] They're intonated [N] correctly for the five strings.
Let's see, we're over 305 18 to 1 ratio [C] keys.
Does have a [D#] two-way truss rod in it.
A Steve Smith [C] double acting
truss rod to keep your neck nice and straight if you ever need it.
[A] [C]
[G]
That is the, [E]
and this one's I call [F#] a black cherry [G] finish.
I use a water-based
[A]
[C] environmentally.
So [G#] that's the [G] SEM5 [E] double cutaway [C] standard.
I guess I should run through a few of the sounds here.
[A] [C]
[G] Let's start with [F#]
[G] the [C] bridge pickup by itself in single coil mode.
That's about as
thin sounding as [A] it'll get.
[Bm]
[C]
And we're [G#] going to go to the [G] two pickups with, [C] in single coil [G] mode.
[C] [G#] This is kind of your [G] strat sound.
[Em]
[C]
And then just the neck pickup warms it up.
[A]
[C]
Okay, that's in all in single coil mode.
So we push this switch down here,
boost it up to two humbuckers.
We'll go back to the bridge position.
And then both pickups.
So we got two humbuckers.
[Cm] [C]
[Em] Nice pulse sound there.
And then just the neck pickup in humbucker mode.
[F] [C]
That's about [A] as fat, the fat sound for it.
[D#]
[C] [Cm]
[C]
Okay, that's the SEM5 single cutaway standard.
