He [E] is a man
I am a man
Hi, I'm Moby, and we're backstage here
at the Angel Orensen Center, and my friend Yang and I
made a song called The Poison Tree,
and the way it came about was kind of strange,
so I wanted to show you the strange way
that The Poison Tree came into existence.
So the song is in E major, and normally you just play
in E major with that chord, like
So I thought we'd play just a second of how
the song was originally written.
Ready?
Look at our lives gone away
My sweet love has gone away
My sweet love has gone away
My sweet love has gone away now
So [A] that would be the normal way of playing it.
But what I wanted to do was
There are these things
It's kind of busy back here, but that's okay.
Sometimes with a guitar, you can be lazy
and do an open tuning [E] like this.
[Em] [B] [Em]
[E]
So that way, with my left hand free,
I can still play the E major.
And one day I was in my living room
with this open-tuned guitar,
and instead of playing it with a pick,
I decided to play with just basically treating the guitar
like a percussion instrument.
And it gave the song just a much different
sort of stranger quality to it,
and so originally I was singing it, so it's like
Look at our life, it's gone away
My sweet love has gone away
My sweet love has gone away
My sweet love has gone away now
[B]
So let's just consider [Ab] that strange noise
in the background [E] to be part of the [B] song.
See, we're supposed to be
But eh, okay.
So that's the way the song happened,
[E]
basically playing this open tuning,
and I was singing it, but then I realized
my voice isn't very good for this song,
so I asked E-Yang to sing it,
and then we ended up with me playing the guitar like this.
Look at our life, it's gone away
My sweet love has gone away
My sweet love has gone away now
It's gone away, my sweet love
It's gone away, my sweet love
It's gone away, my sweet love
My baby, I love my baby now
Love my baby, I love my baby now
Love my baby, I love my baby [Em] now
Look at our shadows, [E] gone away
My sweet love has gone away
My sweet love has gone away
My sweet love has gone away now
My baby, my baby
Look at our life, it's gone away
My sweet love has gone away
My sweet love has gone away
My sweet love has gone away now
Oh my baby, oh my love
Oh my baby now
Oh my baby, oh my love
Oh my baby now
Oh my baby, oh my
Oh my baby now
Oh my baby, oh my love
Oh my baby now
[B]
[E]
Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm
Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm
[Bb] So that's the strange way that that song,
The Poison Tree, came into [E] existence
with an open E major tuning.
My name's Moby, this is my friend E-Yang.
Thank you very much.
