Everything I do gonna be a funk, yeah.
From now [B] on, yeah.
[Bb] [Eb]
[Bbm] [Bb]
Every church has a huge presence of its own, I'm pretty sure.
[Bb]
I haven't spent a lot of time in churches, so maybe that's one of the reasons I was particularly moved.
I was invited to play here only a couple of months ago with my trio.
We shared in the experience.
We did our concert in here.
I think it was a challenge.
It created a challenge for my voice.
I felt like there was something I could reach for in this [Eb] room that [Bb] really inspired my singing,
that inspired the [Eb] spirit of the show, of the songs.
[Bb] For whatever reason, I've decided maybe [Bbm] that these songs might add up to being sort of like secular hymns.
[Bb]
[Db] It also [Bbm] speaks to the church, I think, in a way.
The fact that we are a trio, the fact that we are a versatile trio as well,
where Barack Mori and John Harrington are [Bb] both singing,
that the [Abm] instrumentation [Bbm] of his electric guitar, John's electric guitar, and Barack's [Bb] upright bass
have managed to, [Bbm] I think, reach into a lot of different areas of music.
[Bb] The three of us have [Ab]
put together [Bb] songs over the course of the last two years
that are pretty varied in their backgrounds.
[Ab] Somehow there's a very [Bbm] organic [F] [Bb] continuum there,
[F] where we just keep adding tunes that sort of go in a different direction [Fm] each time,
and [Bbm] they've become complete.
And so by now we've got a whole show of [F] new tunes,
and then we said, hey, [Bbm] let's go back to this church.
[Am] [F] Sister shout.
[G] Hallelujah.
[Am] Sister [G] shout.
Oh, yeah.
[Am] [F] Sister shout.
[Gbm] Uh-huh.
[G] Tell the whole world what it's all [Em] about.
[F] [C]
I guess [A] you could say that a lot of these songs [Gb] are based in the blues.
[Dm] This Willie Dixon [G] song is another [Em] direction there.
The Tom Waits song [F] could be considered [C] sort of based in the blues,
[Am] even though we play it as a tango, which [Eb]
goes with the lyric.
The Alan Toussaint song, Everything I Do, is going to [C] be funky.
Of course now with Alan's very recent passing,
it feels all [E] the more powerful to be able to cover that.
Doing a [G] blues like that in a church in here,
I had that same feeling when we played here a couple months ago,
and I just [C] love the idea that the setting could be [F] considered spiritual.
[C] [E] Trampin'
[D] Tryin' to [G] make heaven [C] mine
[F]
[D] [Em]
From now [B] on, yeah.
[Bb] [Eb]
[Bbm] [Bb]
