I'm a huge fan of music that stood the test of time and all the pieces that we're doing and all the players and the
people that we're honoring have.
They have in one way or another whether it be they were a great person
but most the time in this case they were great musicians and they wrote great songs and they spoke from the heart and it touched a
lot of people.
In 2018 we lost a legend, [Em] the incomparable Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin.
Whether it was gospel, [C] jazz, pop, R&B, rock, [G] soul, you name it, Aretha Franklin could sing it all.
I was a consummate fan of Aretha.
I don't think there was a better singer [N] ever in popular music.
And her piano playing was incredible.
I mean that's one thing that's like really underrated with her is people don't think of her as a pianist.
But man, she'd sit down.
She was a ferocious pianist.
She had jazzy elements, she had pop elements, but the thing that she had was she'd go out and get you right here.
And it was so powerful to listen to and so moving.
Aretha was a true artist.
True artist.
And so I know most people that I've worked with, they all connect to Aretha.
I just remember poring over old videos of her and listening to her sing and how effortless it was and how it just came from here.
And she was one of the first artists where it really started hitting me that the music comes from here first and then here, not the other way around.
Wow, being that close to greatness.
It was like as close as I am to you.
She's playing the piano and singing the master lead vocal and we're all playing in the room together.
Aretha gave us some loose charts and we came up with our own parts and it just gelled.
It was a great band and a great, wonderful experience and an honor to say that I actually made music with [Eb] Aretha Franklin.
She brought God into the room, I think.
Wherever she performed, she brought an anointing.
The reason I'm here today is to honor the Queen, Aretha Franklin.
She's been a huge influence for me and I'm so excited [G] to give her a little tribute today.
If you [Dm] want [G] my love, baby
[C]
If you really [G]
want it, don't be [Bb] afraid, [G] baby

[G] Baby, baby, baby,
