Fans of Valerie Carter may best remember the singer for the decades she performed a backup for James Taylor.
Never one to command the spotlight, Valerie was much more comfortable as a backup singer for some other folks as well,
like Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Brown, Don Henley, Little Feet, and Christopher Cross.
Valerie was a first-call session vocalist and friend to all these artists, but she and Taylor were especially close.
[Dm] [Fm] James decided I need a wall of [C] sound, vocal sound, because my records are getting [G] fuller and fuller,
and he's doing more and more tracks with backing vocals on the records.
And he brought in Kate Markowitz and Valerie, and that was a beautiful sound.
I just love listening to that stuff because there's a specific sound that we had
that was like no other backing vocal group, and a lot of it had to do with Valerie's sound, Valerie's voice.
She really was a solo artist first, [C] and I always think of her that way, even though it was incredible
to sing background vocals with her.
I think she's one of those all-time great solo artists.
She was a very sweet, loving person, and always really nice to me and to everybody, and just had an angelic voice.
She had one of those voices she could sing lead, but she knew how to blend and sing harmony,
but some people can't do that.
They have maybe a great lead voice, but don't know how to make that easy blend.
One of my favorite memories of Valerie was going to a meeting of Recovery in Chicago and talking
about how much Recovery meant to her.
And we were walking across the Wacker Bridge and
headed to a meeting, and I think it was the three of us, James, Valerie, and myself, but
I really loved her concept of Recovery, and that she was really seeking and wanted to stay clean.
When you live in LA and you grow up in LA, you spend a lot of time in your car, and I was listening
to the radio all the time, and I remember driving, and I was on Pacific Coast Highway
in my little red Fiat, and I remember hearing her voice and hearing this version of Uchild, and I [F#m] was
driving and driving like, who is that?
And then when she got to the high, like where she goes up
to the really high part where she belts in the stratosphere, I had to pull over, because I had
to just pull over and sit there and not focus on driving, and then I immediately went out and bought her record.
