You figured this was your goal to get to 40?
Now what do you do?
We had no idea we were going to do this.
We had no idea.
But it's been great.
It's been a good thing.
It came fast.
It only felt like 38.
Yeah.
There's something very special here.
And the music is probably the most important part of the whole thing.
Yeah.
And that's what kept us together, the music.
Well, I know there's a lot of history.
There's too much history to try to cover.
But you say it's the music that's kept you together.
And it goes back 40 years ago.
You weren't playing or you weren't listening
and then playing the same kind of music 40 years ago that you are today.
Well, some of it.
I see it.
Yeah, well.
When we go back to the folk music, the folkloric music,
that's the [G#] stuff we were playing [F#m] when we first started.
But that was the reason why we came together.
[G] That's the reason we got together.
[C#] To learn about [G#] our own culture, our [A] own music.
We're influenced by people like the band and the Fairport Convention,
people like that who took their own culture
and made something modern out of it or kept it,
or the tradition moving along.
We tried to do the same thing with our Mexican music.
We wanted to go back to the roots
and then try to hopefully help propel [C#] forward.
We ended up playing at a restaurant [A] and we were bored,
so we started playing electric guitars again.
Because there was another band that played happy hour behind us.
And they had a drum set and an amp,
so we started horsing around out of boredom.
We kind of stole his amp in a little way.
Conrad did.
We borrowed it.
Conrad did.
But that was part of it.
Learning all this music going back to Veracruz and La Huasteca and all that,
the real traditional stuff,
we kind of worked our way back up to the border,
[C#m] into Conjunto [C#] music.
And that was just a step away from rock and roll,
so why not?
[N] We worked our way around to being [G] poor rock and roll [C#] musicians.
Nothing.
Yeah.
Steve, you're being awfully quiet.
You even look like the odd man out right now,
the way you're sitting in the back row there.
What's your take on all this?
Well, uh
You had to ask him that, huh?
My take on all this.
Well, you know, [E] I'll say this.
We're a legacy brand.
ACL is a legacy brand.
That's a hard thing to do [D#] these days.
There's not much honor in a world that values the stuff that happens,
like a 15-second hit and then [F] it's gone and stuff like that.
So I just want to say it's an honor to be here
celebrating both of our 40th [N] anniversaries.
I think it's an amazing thing that we've both been able to do this
and stay true to our core beliefs for this long
without going off on a side track.
Have you noticed a big change in your audiences over the years?
Yeah, they're old.
Yeah, they're old.
Freaking old.
They've gotten older with us, you know.
They're changing with us.
We have new people that show up.
It's always refreshing to see.
There's like a process.
Some places we go and it's like you see generations.
You see people that we've known [D#] and seen and then they bring people
and then [C#] it's sort of like this process.
It's very rewarding that we can impress generations of families
[Dm] and make them fans and [N] friends for the most part.
Well, obviously you guys aren't ready to hang it up and neither are we.
We're celebrating our 40th anniversary and our history,
but at the same time we're also looking to the future.
And how about you?
Are you looking to the future?
Yes. Same way.
At least another five years.
I'd give us four or five.
I'm just looking forward to a breakfast taco before I leave.
Tomorrow morning breakfast, man.
Manolo.
I'm thinking about it already though.
You're in the right place.
What would you do if you didn't play music anyway?
What could you do?
Why would you ask a question like that, man?
I've been trying to throw you a crumb all over since I started here.
You want to go fight?
Let's go outside.
I'm going to take care of you outside.
[C#] Conrad's a pretty awesome gardener.
He's the only one with a real job.
The rest of us are useless.
It would be really weird not to play music.
We've done it all our lives.
It's a gift.
It's always a gift.
It's a beautiful gift.
