Lisa Stansfield became a household name when she topped the charts with hits like All Around
the World and Change, which showcased not only her remarkable voice, but also her northern roots.
For the last ten years, she's been taking a break from music.
Now she's back though, and we're going to speak to her in just a moment.
But first, here's a reminder of what made her so successful, that she sold more than
20 million records.
I've been [Db] around the world and [G] I, I, I, I can't find my baby.
I don't know when, I don't know why, why he's [Ab] gone away.
And I don't know where he [F] can be, my baby.
[C] But I'm gonna find [B] him.
[C]
[A] If I [Dm] could change [D]
[Cm] [D] today, I [Bb] would change.
[C]
[F] [Em]
[A] [Dm] Cause if I change [E] my world [Cm] into [Gm] a new [D]
place.
[Bb] We're just having an argument with her about how far away she should be on the sofa.
It's not that we don't like you, we want you to catch the light.
You thought I was a bit smelly or something?
There's a huge gap between you and Bill.
No, we just want you to catch, see you in your best possible light.
There's so much space between us.
Well, it doesn't reflect our feelings about you at all.
Not [N] at all.
Just listening to, you haven't changed a single thing.
You're still looking just like you did.
Well, you two are looking pretty hot as well.
What's your secret?
She's telling you it's a big loving now.
I don't know.
I just suppose just to get on with it and I suppose having 10 years off didn't do me too bad as well.
What were you, what were you doing during that period?
Well, I didn't really get like, I had 10 years off.
You haven't been doing nothing from the get go.
No, I mean that would be quite sad really.
Yeah, I did quite a lot of acting and an awful lot of writing really.
Writing songs?
Just constantly writing, yeah.
But you didn't, did you make a deliberate kind of withdrawal from the pop scene, from the music scene because of any particular [Bb] reason
or did you just feel like you needed to chill a bit?
I think it just sort of slowly happened.
I did calm down quite a lot because the first two albums, well the first three albums were just busy, busy, busy
and I didn't have time to do anything really.
So I didn't have time to be me in a way.
But then I just sort of, I slowed down a little bit and then I could, [Gb]
it ended up being sort of 10 years later here I am.
And now 10 years later you've got a new album and a new single.
A new single's called?
Carry On.
Come on then, let's carry on and look at it.
[Ab]
Bit of a gain of philanthropy there isn't there?
A little bit, yeah I think so.
Yeah, but [N] it's almost as if, I don't know what you meant by the time, but even if you do leave me, [Ab] because I haven't left you yet,
but even if you do leave me I'll be alright.
Well she sort of knows that it's inevitable that it's going to happen so [N] she's just basically saying
Off you go then.
She is going to fall apart but she's telling him, no I'm not, I'm not going to fall apart at all.
At the height of your success, hugely, hugely famous, distinctive look, people stopping you everywhere you went.
How did you deal with that level of fame and how has it been kind of taking a step back from that for a bit, for a number of years?
I think when it first happened it was very, very daunting.
I was always very, very aware that everyone was looking at me and now it doesn't bother me that much.
It's sort of, I suppose because you get older and you become more mature hopefully.
Yeah and you just have to get on with your life and you can't let that affect you.
I mean you two must be like that because you're in everyone's household every day.
It's not quite the same as having tens, selling millions [E] of records.
And being a pop idol that's seen every day.
[Db] Well anyway, it's not about us, it's all about you.
I just wonder, of all those songs, if you're writing songs during that whole period,
it must have been quite a challenge to whittle it down to the dozen or so you put on the album.
Yeah, it was quite difficult because there are ten men's songs on the album.
And I think we, you know, ideas and songs.
So you don't record everything but you'll write an awful lot of songs.
So we sort of had a short list of about 50 songs and then we had to, and we kept going,
oh but it's really nice that one and you have to like throw things to the wayside.
You made a double album. Yes, indeed.
Well we're thinking about the next one already.
Hopefully Touch Wood if that works.
There's no wood in here.
Touch my head.
Oh Lisa, lovely to talk to you.
Thanks so much.
The album's called Seven.
It's your seventh?
It is, yeah.
So it's an appropriate name.
The singles carry on and it'll be released a week on Monday.
It's got great horns on it.
