Light (By Lisa Loeb, arr. Andy Beck) - Between the Lines chords

[G] The meaning there was that there's always [Em] more hope, even when you think that there's
no more hope.
[A] And I thought, well, that'd be so great if people could tap into [E] these meanings.
[Bm] [A] But it's [D] so exciting now that [G] choruses and choirs [D] all over the country will get to sing this [A] song.
[Bm] [G] I wrote the [D] song Light because I felt like there were not enough [G] Hanukkah songs around.
And it was [D] funny because Sirius XM [Bm] Radio actually [D] reached out to me and said, we have so [G] many
Christmas songs, would you be interested in writing something [E] for Hanukkah?
And I thought, you know what, this is something [G] that actually meant a lot to me.
I'm Jewish and the holidays have always meant [Bm] something to me growing [F#m] up in my [D] family.
So I really wanted to make a Hanukkah song that [A] wasn't super religious, [Bm] that had the
essence of the holiday.
And I called on one of my great collaborators, Cliff Goldmacher, who's Jewish but doesn't
celebrate a lot of [A] Jewish holidays.
[D] And so he was kind of the [G] perfect person to write it with.
And we came up with a [Em] song that I felt like could be played just on acoustic guitar [A] or
just with a piano and one [Bm] voice.
We ended up recording it with harmonies and other [G] instruments.
But it's really a song that's meant to be about [D] some of the traditions of Hanukkah are
[G] buried in the lyrics.
But [D] really the main message is hope.
And that's what I really wanted to [G] share with people.
And I thought, what a great message to teach [E] my children.
And also when I'm trying to share [G] this holiday of Hanukkah with other people who might not
celebrate it, or even people who do celebrate it, [Bm] they might not know that that's one of
the main themes of the holiday.
When I wrote the song Light with Cliff [A] Goldmacher, it [D] was funny.
As we were writing the [G] song, I started thinking it'd be kind of cool [Em] if synagogues or places
that people who already celebrate [A] Hanukkah could sing this song because [B] sometimes people
[F#m] forget what the [D] holidays are really about.
And I felt like, here's Hanukkah.
The story goes there was only enough [A] oil after the temple [Bm] was destroyed to light one light,
but it actually lasted eight nights.
And for me, I felt like [D] the meaning there was that there's always more [G] hope, even when
you think that there's no more hope.
And [Em] I thought, well, that'd be so great if people could tap into these meanings.
[A] But it's so exciting now [Bm] that choruses and [F#m] choirs [D] all over the country [G] will get to sing the song.
[D] Light is a great song for choirs and choruses [A] to sing, even starting [Bm] with the youngest kids,
because it's a song that the lyrics, [G] they're simple, but [D] they have a lot of meaning.
So people of all ages and all levels of experience can [G] really sing this song.
I [D] did see my daughter's school, and she, like the second graders [G] and some of the elementary
school [D] students, [E] did the song Light.
And it was so great to have a Hanukkah [G] song up there with all of the other holidays, and
something that people of all religions could really relate [Bm] to, and even people [A] who might
[D] not have any religion in [G] particular.
Again, it's just such a universal message [D] with those [A] details mixed in.
And it's got the [Bm] great kind of glockenspiel bell tones that kids can play.
And it's really exciting to me to think [D] that the message of the song and the melody [G] of
the song, that really started from kind of more of [Em] an acoustic guitar Simon and Garfunkel
kind of song, [A] that it can be performed in such a large [Bm] way.
[G] [D] When I was in school, we used to sing a [G] lot in school.
And around [D] seventh or eighth grade, we all sang in a choir.
And it [G] was always so much fun.
My friends and I were always [D] sort of getting [E] in trouble a little bit sometimes, because
we liked to [G] make up new lyrics to songs.
But there's something about singing [Bm] next to people and singing [A] in harmony [D] that is just so beautiful.
[G]
[Em] I [A] hope when people sing light with the [Bm] chorus, with the [A] choir, [D] with a group of people, whether
they're in elementary [G] school or they're [D] grownups who've been doing this forever, [A] I really hope
that [Bm] they take away the melody and the feeling [G] of being able to share [D] one background, this
Judaism or [G] this basic essence of a beautiful [D] holiday.
I hope they can share that with other [G] people and also understand that they can share [E] their
own culture and their own [G] celebrations with other people too.
[Bm] [D] [F#m] [G]
