Welcome back to the channel and today we're going to take a look at a song by Don Henley.
So let's hope the internet gods are good to me and I don't get blocked for this.
The song is The End of the Innocents.
It's a fantastic song.
There's going to be a couple of hiccups in it that I need to show you.
Basically how I play it, what's really going on.
It's really hard to play what is being played on the record, on the piano, on the guitar, but I'm going to show you the best I can.
The song is capoed on the first fret, although it's hard to see the capo here because it's black against this ebony fingerboard on this beautiful Collins guitar.
We are going to call off the chords as if the capo weren't here.
Now the song is basically around [Gb] G and so we start [Ab] with this, it's like this kind of hiccup.
[Eb]
[Abm]
Then we play [Fm] a G [Eb] add 9.
[Ab]
[Eb] To a G.
To a G add 9.
[Ab] So it's
[Eb] [Bbm]
Am7, A11, [Ab]
which is basically a G triad over A.
[Gb] Now [F] here, what's being played is an Em9 to an Em over D [Fm] to a C add 9 to a C.
So you can play it like this, [Ab]
[Db]
[B] which is the [Fm]
Em7, Em7 over [Ab] D, C add 9, and then bring the third in, still a C add 9.
[B] [Fm] [Ab]
[Db]
But for me that doesn't give the sound of the record and I'm really more about giving the sound of the record.
So, here's how I [Eb] play it.
[Ab]
[Eb] [Bbm]
[Fm]
[Ab]
[Eb] And so what I'm doing there is I'm playing an Em9 this way [G] with the F sharp, [Ab] G, D, [F]
[Fm] with an E in the bass.
To basically just an Em7, knowing that the bass will pick up the D.
And then to a C add [Ab] 9, where I'm placing the first finger open and then on [Db] the E.
So [G] again, it's
[Eb] [Ab]
[Eb] [Bbm]
[F] [Fm]
[Ab] [Db]
[Ab] again,
[Eb] [Ab]
[Eb] [Bbm] [Bb]
[Fm]
[Ab] [Db] [Ab]
[F] then it goes to the verse.
Now you can see I'm also doing this, which is just D, E, G.
You can hear that on the record as well.
The verse.
[Ab]
[Db]
[Ab]
[Db] [Ab]
[Eb] [Ab]
[Db]
[Ab]
[Fm] [Ab]
[Eb] So [Fm] we can see it ends there with an Em7, [Ab] C add 9, or G over [Eb] C to a D.
Now we get to the [F] pre-chorus.
[Eb] Now the pre-chorus basically is just a doubled section, which goes [Fm] Em7, [Cm]
Bm7, [Bbm] Am7 to [Db]
C, [Fm] Em7, [Ab] C add 9 [Eb] to D.
Again, [Fm] Em7, [Cm] Bm7, [Bbm] [Db] Em7, C, [Fm] Em7, [Ab]
C add 9 [Eb] to D.
So we'll do that.
[Fm] [Cm]
[Fm] [Db]
[Fm] [Ab] [Eb]
[Fm]
[Gm] [Bbm] [Db]
[Fm] [Ab]
[Eb] Now the chorus.
[Ab] G, [Eb] D.
[Fm] [Cm]
[Bbm] [Db] [Ab]
[Eb] [Ab]
[Fm] [Cm]
[Bbm] [Cm]
[Db] [Eb]
Okay, [Ab] [Eb]
[Bbm] [Fm]
[Ab]
[F]
then it's going to do the verse again.
Pre-chorus, chorus.
After that chorus, it's going to go to a bridge.
The bridge starts with an Am7 add 11, which is this.
[Ab] We have a G, a [Db] C, and a [Bb] D.
And we play to [Ab]
an A11, which is really like a G triad [Bb] under an A, [Bbm] to an Am.
So [Bb] it's
[Bbm]
And [E] that same rhythm, we're going to play with the B.
[Fm]
[Eb]
[Bb] So it's Em, D to a C add 9.
And then again,
[Bbm] [Fm]
[Ab] [Eb]
[Ab] [Bb]
[Ab]
right back to the last verse.
The last verse does not have a pre-chorus.
It's verse right into the chorus.
[B] And then it just ends with the intro over [Ab] and over until it just lands on the G at the end.
[C] Folks, that's how you [Eb] play The End of the Innocence.
I love the song.
I love Henley.
Well, I love Henley's voice.
I love his songs.
The person?
Eh, who cares?
Anyways, the song's great.
I dig [B] it.
You dig it.
We all dig it.
Very good.
[Gbm]
[Bm]
[Dbm] [Bm]
[Db] [Bm]

[Bm] [G] [E]
[Bm] [G] [B]

[Em] [Bm] [G]

_ _ _ _ _ [Fm] _ _ _
