Lesson 3 - The Upstroke Kick Lick John Bonham Technique chords
Start Jamming...
This is lesson three, something I call the upstroke kick lick.
[Dbm]
[Gb] All right, let's slow it down a bit.
[Ab] This is played in 3-4.
Count on the hi [Gm]-hat.
1-2 [Gb]-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3.
Now let's take it right from the beginning.
Start with the hi-hat on the upstroke.
Bring the kick in.
And the floor tom goes on the same beat as the hi-hat.
[B] First snare shot lands on the downbeat, same as the floor [E] tom and hi-hat.
The [Ab] next snare is on the upbeat, lands on the kick.
Let's slow it down a bit so you can see the pattern the hands do.
[N]
Bring it back up.
Try adding some accents on the bass drum and see what happens.
Now let's pick her up a notch.
[Eb] [Gb]
And back up to speed.
[Am]
[Ab] And like I've mentioned, accents are very effective.
[Gb]
[Bb] Here's a closer [Gb] look at what the feet are doing.
Notice the [Ab] back and forth [G] alternating motion.
[Ab]
Same as playing double kick drum.
[Gb]
[F] Now let's try it again slowly.
[N]
Let's incorporate it a little bit.
[A]
[Abm]
[G]
[Gb]
The [C] hi-hat is actually [Ab] what's keeping this all together.
That's keeping time.
That has to be steady.
It's
[Bb]
[Ab] [Bb]
[Ab]
[Ab]
[Bb] [Ab]
[G] [Bb] a very effective lick.
Thanks for watching.
[Gb]
See you at the next lesson.
