Oh mercy.
I just I [Db] want to tell you that I was doing fine until 1963.
[B] While I was sleeping.
[B] Wait a minute.
He wants to take a picture.
Come [E] on.
Take a picture.
[G] Here.
There.
[N] Get some action in this.
Hey.
[G] Get that.
Get that head.
Hey.
Lou.
Lou.
This isn't your trio for Christ's sake.
That's it.
There.
[A] Come on.
There.
[G] That's it.
That's it.
[N]
It was in 1963.
And I was happier than hell.
We were playing in Las Vegas.
And Mary and I went down to do the Colgate Comedy Hour in Hollywood with Abbott and Costello.
I don't know if you guys, anybody's that old.
That was in 1963.
And Mary and I did a thing on the stage where I says follow me.
And she [Bm] says, OK.
And [Em] so I hit a chord.
I hit [G] a chord, you know, like that.
And she hit a chord like [Em] that.
And then I went, [N] will you do that?
You do Mary's [E] part.
[Eb] [B] We didn't even rehearse this.
Mary and I rehearsed this thing.
Yes.
[E] I can't do that [Bb] anymore.
Oh, do this.
[Dbm]
[Bb] [D] [N] See, you got problems, too.
Surgery didn't help you either, did it?
Well, what happened [E] is that I played.
Finally, I played a fast run.
[C] And I can't do that anymore either.
[E] And I did this fast run [N] down the board.
And Mary started to play it.
And I went like that.
Like that.
And I grabbed her hand [E] and I cracked [B] my little finger on the program, on the TV show in 1963.
And I hit her guitar like that.
But I hit it this way.
And I broke [N] that little finger.
And we had to finish the song, which was called Home Sweet Home.
We may even do it for you.
But this number, Mary and I did.
And when we finished that, we had to go in and play Tiger Rag.
The next song was Tiger Rag.
And, jeez, Christ, I played a lot of guitar at that time.
And what happened with the broken finger, I come down and the string broke.
This is in the museum.
It's over in the, what do they call it?
Yeah, the broadcast museum.
It's in there.
You can go over and see this thing where I broke my finger.
And the first song, the second song, I broke a string.
And we finished that song.
Mary and I finished it.
When I got to the airport, when Mary and I got to the airport, people were all saying,
Oh, my goodness.
I saw you where you hurt your finger.
And then you went in and you played Tiger Rag.
And it almost made us famous, [B] you know.
[N] But not completely.
What really made us famous is when I recorded with Bing Crosby.
And when I recorded with Bing Crosby, that's when a lot of people that thought I was a guitar
realized that Les Paul was playing with Bing Crosby in a song called It's Been a Long, Long Time.
[Abm]
[B] And when that was number one all [N] over the world on the strength of that record with Bing,
I got a job in Needles, California.
In the middle of the Mojave Desert playing for four bartenders in an Indian.
And it was out there that I found out that I wasn't going to make it without a vocal.
This isn't sour grapes, but I was much happier with Mary than I was with Bing.
[Em] [E] And likewise now.
[Bb] I know.
I don't blame you.
No, Lou.
[E] We had our moments together.
We had our moments, yeah.
Yeah.
[F] You fag.
[G] There you go.
[N] Now we can tell everybody.
That's right.
Right?
For years we had to hide what we were up to.
He's not eating.
He stopped eating.
Ever since I blew your nose, you didn't even finish yet.
Don't worry about it.
So what happened is that I called Bing and I says,
Bing, I find that it takes both of us, you know, and I need you in Needles.
And he was making some [Bm] pictures with Bob Hope, some road pictures.
So he said he couldn't make it.
He was committed to making these Paramount pictures.
So I had to do the best I could without Bing.
And I'd like to do the number for you now.
All right?
