Start Jamming...
[C] [D] Leon [E] Russell, the master of space and time, has died.
[Em] He was 74.
[D] I'm John Bowden from
[G] Rock History Music.
The singer got that [C] ambiguous title during his stint as [D] Joe Cocker's [E] musical director
for Mad Dogs and Englishmen in [C]
1970.
[G] Russell died in his sleep last night at his home in Nashville.
His health [C] had not been
good for at least the last 10 [D] years.
In [E]
2010, he underwent surgery to stop leaking [C] brain
fluid and suffered [G] a heart attack in July 2016.
It was Elton [Cm] John a [F] few years ago that
felt it was his mission to make sure that [Em] we had not forgotten who Leon Russell [D] was.
So [F] much so that the pair recorded a fabulous [Am]
rootsy Americana album called [G] The Union [F] in
2010.
On hearing [C] the news of his old [Em] friend, Elton John wrote,
My darling [G] Leon Russell passed [F] away last night.
[C] He was a mentor, [Am] inspiration, and so kind
to me.
[G] Thank God we caught [C] up with each other and made The Union.
[D] He got his [E]
reputation
back and felt fulfilled.
I loved [C] him and always will.
Russell's [Bm] own website wrote, The master of space and time [G] was a legendary [C] musician and
songwriter originally [D] from Tulsa, [E] Oklahoma, who performed his gospel-infused [C] southern
boogie piano rock, [G] blues, and country music for over 50 years.
He was [F] born in 1942.
[C] His
real name was [G] Claude Russell Bridges.
And like many who were [F] wired to have that special
[C] gift, he also had [Am] the wisdom to perfect it.
[G] Russell got on the stage [C] as early as he could, playing nightclubs as a young [G] teen.
And of
course he got people talking quickly, [F] and soon Jerry Lee Lewis [C] was knocking on his door.
[Em] By the time he was 17, he had already [G] moved to Los Angeles [C] and was a hot session player.
[D] Who'd backed up The [E] Burge, Herb Albert, and Phil Spector.
He also earned [C] his membership
into the now famous [D] Wrecking Crew, a [G] backup studio cats who were the best in the [C] business.
And then came that segue that [D] doesn't always [E] happen to top studio cats.
Instead of his
name [C] being in the back of the album, if at all, [Bm] it was in the [G] front in big letters.
His self-titled debut [F] had a tune that featured [C] that special quality that [G] would describe many
of his future hits.
A [F] lot of songs that would become [C] hits for other people.
It was kind
[Am] of a special ingredient that a lot of [G] jazz standards [F] have.
On that debut album, A [C] Song
For You.
[G] A tune that could be recorded by many different [F] artists in tons of different
[C] genres and [Am] still sound rooted in whatever [G] genre it appeared [F] in.
A gentle tune about
[C] forgiveness.
It's been [G] recorded by the Carpenters, Ray Charles, Willie [F] Nelson, Donna Summer,
and in [Am] 2005, Herbie Hancock and [G] Christina Aguilera's version [F] was nominated for a Grammy.
Like A Song For [G] You, Leon Russell's This Masquerade was [F] recorded by a lot of people.
But [C] there's
one [Am] jazz cat that had [G] it on his 1976 [Em] album, Breezin'.
It [D] became one of George [E] Benson's
signature songs.
Originally, [Em] it was the B-side of Russell's [D] 1972 hit [G]
Tightrope.
And by the
way, it earned George Benson a [C]
1977 Record of the [D] Year Grammy.
[E]
Russell almost disappeared
in the 80s [C] and 90s.
Instead [D] of playing big stadiums, [G] he was playing clubs.
Elton [D] John
said a few years ago, [E] there are some people who are born to be leaders of [C] musicians.
[Bm] And
he is.
[G] He is an inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the [C] Songwriters Hall of Fame.
[D] He was married to his second [E] wife, Janet, since 1979 and has six [C] children.
May he rest
[D] in peace.
When people say there's no good music out there, I always say, [C] go back in
time.
[D] You don't have enough [E] years to listen to all the great music in the history of rock
and roll.
[Cm] Listen to [D] Leon Russell's Kearney album or his debut album.
Or [C] Elton John and
Leon [D] Russell's The Union.
I'm John [E] Boden.
