[N] [B] Leo, thanks for being here [Ab] with us tonight.
Thank you, thanks for having me.
How is it that he [F] maintains looking like an eight-year-old all the time?
I got started [C] late.
I exa
you know [A] the other [Bb] one that's always back here of you?
[Ab] I wore that one [F] out.
It's mean.
[Bm] I hope it [F] is.
[Eb] Leo, I know that you [F] do all sorts of live performances,
and people come to hear your music,
but [Gb] I think they also come to, you know, see who Leo Kottke is.
How important is it for you to be an entertainer
and to have people [Abm] walk away with a sense of who [B] you are?
Well, it's gotten to be very important.
It's the only [Ab] job that I'm capable of handling at the moment.
I was in the Navy for four months, which gives you an idea of my
Yeah.
Gives you an idea of why this is the [Am] only thing I can do.
It's not too [F] difficult at the level that I was at in the Navy to [G] get along,
[B] but [Eb] it didn't work.
It didn't work for you.
[Ab] Why is that?
[F] [B] I
[Bm] I don't know [Bb] if
well, it was
I put a [A] boat, for example,
[Bb] [A] I was on the half-beak, USS Half-Beak,
[Gb] and I put it [G] into what's called a 25-degree down bubble,
which means [Gb] it was 15 degrees past out of control.
[Ab] So they got rid of Leo.
That was part of the problem they had with me.
It's true.
You know, all you have there on a submarine
is a little [F] air bubble and [E]
a
It's [C] a carpenter's level.
That's how they steer a submarine.
[B]
Is that how they do it?
And I think [Ab] we all wanted to know that.
[F] That's good, Leo.
I'm getting my submarine lesson tonight.
What's the [Ab] difference, Leo, between [C] doing live [F] performances and, you know,
like [Gb] doing this tonight, a half-hour concert on television?
Well, live performances are fairly comfortable.
Television is, I think, [F] [Bbm] more like
Weird animal, isn't [F] it?
Excruciating.
Yeah.
You can enjoy [A] it.
I mean, I [Gb] can trust most of these eyeballs and [F] elbows I see out here,
but you [Eb] never know.
[B] You think you can?
It's really not them.
It's just the change.
It's [D] very different up here.
And I rarely [Gb] sit up when I'm playing something and talk [Dbm] to somebody.
Oh, I see.
Sit up and talk.
I thought you were going to say that you rarely sit up.
I was going to [Ab] say, what do you usually do [Bb] when you play?
Yeah.
[Ab] I got to [C] go to one of Leo's concerts.
[F]
I don't come out and lie down, but I do come [Em] out and sit [F] down,
which has always puzzled me [G] a little.
Most [C] people stand up.
[Ab] But you like doing television, then?
Yeah.
[Bm] I
[Bb] No.
[Ab]
[B] Okay.
[Ab] And [Bm] that's Leo [C] Kottke.
I can [Gb] appreciate it, though.
I mean, [B] I [Ab] try.
I'll get into it.
We're really happy that you're here,
so I'm glad that you decided to do it, even though it might not be the best thing in the world.
I enjoy doing it.
[Eb] I know that when I [B]
sing a song, Leo,
I [Ab] want to ask you this because we're leading into an instrumental tune that you're going to do.
And, you know, I think of the [B] lyrics when I'm singing.
When [Db] you're doing an instrumental thing, what do you think about?
[Ab]
My brain [F] just becomes a [Abm] vacuum up there.
That's the nice thing about it,
is I can completely [Gb] get away from myself and anything [Eb] else when I'm playing it.
It's unfortunate those times when you discover you've [G] gone too far
and you can't use your mind to bring yourself back.
[Ab]
But when it does work, it's [Gb] very nice.
Let's give him a chance to do that.
Here he is again, Leo Kottke.
