Hey, I'm Erika Olson and tonight on this Music Minute we are [Ab] at The Echo with Canadian singer-songwriter Leif Vohlebeck.
Welcome Leif.
Hi.
Thanks for joining us.
Thanks for having me.
When did you get the music bug?
When I was a kid.
I just always played music.
[Eb] My grandpa played violin [Db] and piano.
With [Ab] the North Americana record, I [Eb] know you did somewhat of a live [Ab]-to-tape recording.
Did you try and accomplish that with this as well?
Yeah, this is even more that.
We did one day of just setting up all the piano mics, all the drum mics, guitar mics,
and I just made different stations.
So [Eb] it has this nice, open, [Ab] simple feeling.
Tell us about the song you're performing [Eb] on Music Minute.
It's called Elegy.
[Ab] It's the one song that I tried it a couple times with the band and it was coming out
wrong and then [Db] I stripped it down and I just [Ab] played it with my drummer, [Eb] Olivier.
I was on [Ab] the piano, she was on the drums.
Restraint pays off, I guess.
Yeah, I guess.
Isn't that [Eb] funny?

Take a look at me now.
What did you want to accomplish with this album?
I just wanted it to be more me.
Before I was [Db] kind of a lot more, I was saying, oh, this record is [Eb] amazing.
How do I do that?
And I kind of just started [Ab] getting tired of thinking about other people when I was playing music.
So I just wanted to make a record that was a bit more natural.
Hearts on fire, so is the [Fm] pace.
[Ab] Everyone around here is telling me to [C] act my age.
I'm trying.
[Db] Things I want to reveal [Ab] in the light that is given.
Oh, to be [Db] freed from the party when all [Ab] else is rain outside, blowing in the [Fm] curtains.

Seven [Ab] ugly reasons kept me away from you.
[Db] Nothing [Eb] is much weaker than the resolve of moment.
[Db] Everyone around here [Ab] seems to think it over.
I remember when we was alone in the room.
Staring out [Eb] your window when we were both.
[Db] And I was so [Ab] young, babe, I hoped that you knew that I meant well.
[Db] When I looked in your [Ab] eyes, thought I [Eb] knew you could tell.
[Ab] Now I'm blown back from the cemetery [Cm] gaze.
[Ab] You, I love dealing on my [F] own.
[Fm]
[Db] To be reunited [Ab] when the sky went open.
Where my feet [Db] are so [Ab] tired, but my, my spirit ain't broken.

What's your next album going to be?
What do you want to do?
I'm working on it right now.
The songs, [F] they're just a bit stinkier.
Like a bit more like, [Cm] like a bit, this is like a little bit kind of smooth and [F] warm.
And I just wanted to be a little bit more, [Ab] a bit edgier.
