[D]
[Bb] [D] [G] Hey everyone, I'm Allison Bennett.
Today I'm going to show you an easy way to play Led Zeppelin's Kashmir.
You don't need to do an alternate tuning for this one.
The proper way to play it is with dadgad tuning, and I have a separate video on that.
Alright let's take a look.
[C] First I'll play the riff without talking.
[D] [Bb]
[G]
[D]
[Bb]
[Bm]
[D]
[Gm] So our finger is going to stay on the third string for the entire part.
We begin with the second fret, third string, [N] and you're going to strum the fourth and
the third strings together at the same time.
Now for the very first time, you're going to go three strums and a [D] rest.
[G] Then the riff really starts, and you don't do that again, but you do strum it three times
here again, and then add the fourth string open.
[D]
Next [Gm] we move to the third fret.
Strum three times and a rest.
[Bb]
So I'm resting with my right hand, kind of karate chopping with the pinky side of my palm.
So we did three strums and a rest, three [G] more strums, and an open [Bb] fourth string.
[D]
[Gm] Alright [G] let's take it from the top.
[D]
So that's the intro, [A] and then the riff [D] starts.
[Bb] Now
[D] [Gm] we're climbing up to the fourth fret.
Strum three times and a [D] rest, three times and a fourth string open.
Next the fifth fret, we do the same thing.
Three strums, rest, three strums, open fourth string.
Next we [G] skip a fret and go to the seventh fret.
Three strums and a [D] rest.
[G] [E] Then we go back to the second fret and [G] start it all over again, with the three strums and
the fourth [D] string open.
[Bb]
Start the whole process over [G] again,
[D]
and that repeats [Db] over and over and over again.
[G] So that was the main iconic riff of the song.
Now let's take a look at the next part.
First I'll play it slowly without talking.
[D]
[F] [D] [G]
So we're still on the third string for most of this, and we're at the twelfth fret, strumming
strings four and three again.
And you're just going to strum once, and then the [D] eleventh fret, tenth [Dm] fret, [D] ninth fret.
[Gm] You're just going down fret by [Em] fret.
But [G] after the ninth fret we're going to skip a fret and go to the seventh fret.
And when we go to seven-sixth, the rhythm's going to be a little bit [D] faster.
[G] So, so far it sounds like this.
[D] [Dm]
[D] [B]
[C] Alright, now moving on.
[D] Fifth fret, fourth fret, third [Bb] fret, [D] second fret.
[B] So that whole descending line sounds like this.
[G]
[D] [Dm] [D]
[Bm] [Bb] [D]
[Em] And then the next part is on the fourth string.
I'm going to use my second finger on the third fret, fourth [F] string.
Pluck just that string.
Then the second fret, [E] fourth string.
[Em] And then the open [D] fourth string.
[F] [E] [D]
Right when I pluck the fourth string [F] open, [E] [D] traveling [G] back to the twelfth fret, because
it's a big jump, you're going to give yourself a head start to get back there in time to
repeat the riff.
This riff is repeated.
Also the first riff is repeated, as I'm sure you will notice when you listen to the song.
And that's about it.
So there you have it, the two main riffs to Kashmir.
It was actually one of the first songs I learned to play as a teenager, and I learned it just
like this, this version.
So have fun with it, and when you're ready to move on, check out the other video on how
to play it with a dadgad tuning.
Thanks so much for watching, see you next time.
