Learning Triads From Hendrix chords
Start Jamming...
So one of the most popular questions I get is,
hey Tyler, thanks for showing me all these triad shapes,
what the heck am I supposed to do with them now?
So the easiest way to internalize any new concept
is to put it into context of music.
It sucks to just run a metronome and learn shapes.
So whether it's scales, triads, chord forms, arpeggios,
whatever it is, I always like to play music
in the background, whether that's a backing track
or even just drums, to internalize a new concept.
So with that said, I am going to teach you
how to implement triads into your guitar playing
using one of the greatest chord progressions ever written,
Little Wing.
So here's the process.
Start with only root position triads,
just playing each chord whole notes.
From there, differentiate the rhythms,
whether it's just quarter notes plucking through
each triad shape, still on root position,
or any rhythm you want to.
See if you can choose different triads
other than just root triads.
From there, you can build in a little bit of improvising.
So these four stages won't happen right in a row.
You may spend a few weeks even on just playing
root position triads, memorizing the shapes
and where they are on the guitar neck,
depending on which chord you are playing, major or minor,
or you may pick it up really quick and move along faster.
It doesn't matter.
Go at your own pace and make sure you are learning
and feeling good before you move on to the next phase.
Remember, the first phase, root position triads,
whole notes, just change with the chords of Little Wing,
and then do some type of rhythm,
still just root position triads,
plucking through those chords,
and then the third phase would be playing
not just root position triads,
trying to maybe do a little voice leading
to make the positions not [Abm] change
so drastically across the neck,
and then finally integrating a little bit of improvising,
some soloing, and then coming back to your triad
where you want to.
So I'm gonna demonstrate that entire process now.
I'm gonna start on phase one,
and then each time the chord progression loops,
I'm going to move up a stage
until I get to straight up improvising.
So you'll see exactly how to start using the shapes
that you've already learned.
And if you haven't learned any of these triads,
then check out Guitar Super System,
[D] link down in the description,
and you'll learn all about them.
Keep shredding.
