Start Jamming...
Hey there, I'm Brian Vanderwerk of the [F#] band The Birth Pipe and
I'm traveling as you can see I'm in a hotel room.
This is not not [F#m] my home.
[F#]
Die if she thought people thought this was her home.
But I thought I would show you how to play The Freshman very simply.
I see a lot of versions out there and it's all great.
I love different renditions.
I'm flattered to see people doing their own renditions of it and you can strum it,
you can play it on piano, do whatever you like, but this is the way that I play it.
I thought I'd show it to you today.
I put the capo on two on the second fret and
so all of the chords that I name out are going to be not the actual chords but
[G#m] reflective of the chords when you have the capo on.
[E] For instance, this is an E chord
but it's a D when you have the capo on as far as I'm concerned.
[G#] Here's how we [B] do it.
[D#] D form,
leave that middle finger open, let the E string ring and [E] you start picking from the D string and
[B] [A] then just bring this G right down hit the bass and
you know notice I left my ring finger there on the
whatever note that is.
[B]
[C#] Go to the B minor,
[B] walk it down there [A] to the G,
again the ring finger is [E] on the 1, 2, 3, 4, [A] 5th fret there and [E] then
D, I'm sorry,
hammer off.
[A]
Let's [E] try that again.
[C#m] Same thing here.
[B] [A] Now [C#m] here's the pre-chorus.
[E] [A] That's just a B [C#m] minor, A, G, then [B] [A] [C#m]
[B] [A] [C#m] [B]
[A] [E] to the chorus.
For the life [A] of me, I cannot [C#m] remember
Made [B] us think that [A] we were wise and we never [E] compromised
For the life of [A] me, I
cannot believe [C#m] we'd ever die for [B] these sins.
[A] We were merely fresh [E] men.
And start it all over.
Now the bridge [G#m] is simply F sharp minor.
[G#] Again, that's an F sharp [C] minor that is reflective of having me on the capo on the second fret.
[A] Walk it up to the G, [B] D.
Hey
[A]
[E] I'm singing softly because I am [B] in a hotel room in the public.
[A] Hey
[B] [A] [E]
[B] That's essentially it.
Pretty simple stuff.
Again, I'm self-taught.
I don't do tabs or any of that business.
I kind of make it up as I go along and what I made this one up
Ended up being a pretty big hit song.
Hey, thanks for watching.
