[Db] Hi, I'm Sina and I'm a drummer.
[N] Today I would like to teach you how to play drums in about 10 minutes.
[Dm] [C] [Gm]
[Bb] Well, you might not [C] sound exactly like this right away.
Or [G] like this.
[Gm] Or [F] [C]
[Fm] like this.
[C] [Ab] [Fm] But [Cm]
you will get there.
I have recorded about 200 drum covers over the past few years
and those were examples of the most popular ones.
Today I would like to teach you only one basic groove
that you can use to play almost every rock and pop song there is.
And the best thing about it,
you don't even need a drum set to understand about the basics of drumming.
Let's go back to those examples I showed you before
and try to find the common ground of these grooves.
All of these songs are in 4-4.
This means that there are 4 quarter notes in every bar.
If you give each quarter note a number,
you can count to 4 in every bar and the groove repeats after that.
To figure out where the counts are in a bar,
listen to this, relax and tap your feet to the groove.
[Ab] [Fm] [Cm] These are the quarter notes.
[C] I put them on the screen.
[Ab] [Cm]
The [Eb] first thing you notice after comparing all of these grooves,
the toms seem to be completely unnecessary.
Let's take them [Gb] away.
Also, who needs cymbals?
Now, there are only 3 essential elements of the drum kit left.
Let's start with the heart of every drum kit, the snare drum.
This drum has wires underneath.
That's why it sounds like this.
[Ab] [N]
Without the wires, it would sound like this.
[Fm]
[Gb] [N] You usually play the snare drum with your left hand.
However, if you are left-handed, you might prefer to play it like this.
Now, listen to [C] this example again and concentrate on the snare [Bb] drum.
[G]
[Gm] [F]
[Gm] [C] You usually play the snare drum on every 2nd and 4th beat of every bar.
This is called the backbeat and it has become pretty much the standard in popular music.
This is very important, so I think this drum has really earned its place
right in the middle of every drum [Cm] set.
[Dm] Another very important drum is the bass drum or kick drum.
This is the biggest drum of every drum set and therefore the lowest.
To play the bass drum, you need a kick pedal.
It looks like this.
And it sounds like this.
Now, try to listen to what the bass drum does here.
[C] [Bb] [A] [Em] You [Bb] have noticed that the bass drum does not play exactly the same pattern in every bar,
like the snare drum does.
However, there is one count that almost always has a bass drum.
The one.
Every other beat is optional, but the most common groove has a bass drum on the 1 and 3 of every bar.
[C] [Cm]
[Ab] [N] Now, we already know what to play on every beat of the 4-4 bar.
With this super easy groove, you can already accompany other musicians in rock and pop music without interfering.
You can play this groove even without a drum kit.
Just use your hands, your feet or any item around you.
Let's quickly look at the hi-hat as well.
It consists of two cymbals on top of each other.
You can open and close the hi-hat with your left foot.
Fun fact.
At the beginning of the last century, this instrument was only played with the foot.
Because you would not hit it with a drumstick, it was much lower and called the lowboy.
Once someone had the brilliant idea to hit it with a stick as well,
it was mounted much higher on the drum kit and is since called the hi-hat, later hi-hat.
For now, put your left foot on the pedal and keep the hi-hat closed.
The first thing most beginners learn and also the most common groove has eighth notes on the hi-hat.
To learn this is a bit more tricky, because there are some notes that are played together with the bass drum or snare drum
and some notes where the hi-hat is completely on its own.
But with a bit of practice, it is not so hard.
Look, even my sister can do it.
Or my dad.
[Dbm]
And even my mom.
[Ab] Feel free to try this coordination exercise now.
You don't need a drum set to do so.
[N] You now understand about the basics of drumming.
Literally every groove in pop and rock music was inspired by this exact groove.
Of course, you can change the bass drum pattern.
Or the hi-hat pattern.
Or move your right hand to another cymbal.
Or even play a drum fill on the toms every now and then.
But you can usually find the basic elements hidden somewhere in every song.
[Eb] [Db] [Ab]
[N] When I listen to music, I love listening to the drums.
And I try to figure out what the drummer does to create those sounds.
Try it yourself if you like.
Start by listening to the bass drum and snare drum.
That was it for today.
Thank you very much for watching.
And let me know in the comments if you would like to see more basic tutorials like this one.
Bye.
