[D] [G] Welcome [D] to a guitar friendly guitar lesson.
My name [Gm] is Brett.
Hello.
I'm from the [A] guitar friendly dot-net blog
[G] And if you haven't been over there, I encourage [A] you to check it out lots of helpful [C] info and tips on playing [D] guitar
But today we're gonna look [G] at the basics of guitar strumming [D] patterns
We're gonna look at [G] just a couple different [D] strumming patterns and how to play those
[G] You'll be able to use these strumming [D] patterns for lots of different ways
So [G] I'm with these patterns it will play lots of different [D] songs.
I'm excited to show them to you.
So with that being said, let's get started
All [N] right.
Let's learn our first strumming pattern.
Our first strumming pattern is going to consist of all down strums
And we're gonna line our strumming pattern to a count of one two, three four
So let's count off and play a G chord with all down strums
So one [G] two, three four one two
three four one two, three four
down down down down
One two three four now, I know that's simple but um as you feel more comfortable with that
try adding a
Chord switch.
So let's switch from a G chord to a D chord while we're strumming that
one two, three four
one two three four one two three four [D] one two three four
[Gm] Again [E]
I know it's slow.
Let's start off slow first.
You can't play fast unless you can play slow at first
[D] so work on being consistent and
Keeping good time.
[G] [D]
[G] All right.
Let's take a look at our [D] next strumming pattern
For this next one.
We're gonna add [N] some up strums with our down strums.
So our new pattern is gonna be
down down up down down up
Let me play that for you one more time
down down up down down up
Let's play that over a G chord
Again, we're gonna count off like we did last time
one two three four [G] one two
Three four
The important thing to pay attention to and take note of and this might be a little tricky
But our up strums do not fall exactly on beats one two, three four of the measure
In fact, they fall a little bit after beats two and a little bit after beats four
This would be called the back beats of beats two and four listen again
one two three four
I
Don't know if you heard that but
Our up strums do not fall exactly on the beats one two, three or four
They fall a little bit after beats two and four we can count this off by saying
one two and three four and one two and three four and one two
four and one two and three four and
[E] That's just a different way to count it again.
It's important that we're playing the strumming pattern in time
So practice it off.
It's very slow at first and then as you feel more comfortable try adding a chord change
So let's um change from a G to a D chord one two three [G] four
[D]
[Gm] Again
[Em] start off slow and work your way up
[C] [G] [D]
[E]
