Hey guys, it's Karl Brown from GuitarLessons365.com.
Today we're going to learn how to play Lean On Me by Bill Withers.
So we're taking the piano parts, putting them on guitar.
So that's always going to make for some rather challenging parts if you really want to try
to recreate all the notes that are happening on the piano.
So that's what I'm trying to do here.
So I'm not doing the most simplified version.
You can find other versions I'm sure that are more simplified.
I'm trying to recreate the piano part as much as possible.
Alright, I think the chords can really sound nice and rich if you do that.
So I'm in standard tuning here.
We're going to start here with the first chord which is just a C [C] major, so no big deal.
Alright, hit that again.
Then we're going to grab [F] a D minor chord, but we're going to do it a little bit differently
than you might have done it before.
We're going to have the fifth fret on the D string.
[D] [Dm] I'm [D] sorry, the A string, it's a D note.
[F]
Third fret here on the D [A] string and then second [Dm] fret on the G.
[C] So we have this.
[Dm]
Grab that D minor and now just move that up [Em] two frets.
So [C] that's how the piano movement is a real [Dm] quick [Em]
moving [D] up from a D minor [C] to an E minor
and then just a regular F major bar [F] chord.
[C] So we have this.
[Dm]
[Em] [F] Now reverse that.
F [Em]
to the E minor, [Dm] D minor [C] and the C.
So we have this.
[Dm] [Em]
[F]
[Em] [Dm] [C]
Alright, then back up.
[Dm]
[Em] Now instead of going to the F here, we're going to go to this, which is the G6 chord.
So what I'm doing [G] here, I'm going to play the third fret on the low E string, fifth
fret on the D, fourth on [Em] the G and fifth on the B.
[G] That A string is muted by the bottom
of my index finger.
So you can [Em] just strum across all the way to the second string and then we're going to
resolve that to this [Dm] and
[G] that's just going to be a third fret here on the low E, [F] third
fret on the D, [D] third fret on the B and then the second fret here [G] on the G string.
Once again, the fifth string is muted.
You can mute it with the bottom of your middle finger this [Dm] time.
[Em] So we have this.
[F]
[C] Pretty challenging.
[Dm] [Em]
[Dm]
[C] And then start over again and [Dm] [Em] [F]
[Em]
[Dm] [C] then this time [Dm] we're [Em] going to end it with [G] just this [C]
[G] G dominant 7 chord.
You can play it like this.
[C]
[G] Alright, so it's just, I'm just using the same strings though just so it sounds [E]
kind of [G] uniform.
Third fret here on the G, I mean on the G note, which is the [F] low E string, third fret
on the D [G] string, third fret on the B string and then your little finger is going to play
the fourth fret there on the G.
Muting that A string again so we have this [C]
[Dm] [Em] [G]
[C] and resolve that to the C major.
So I'll play through all that real slow.
[Dm] [Em]
[F]
[Em] [Dm] [C]
[Dm] [Em] First ending.
[Dm] [C] Now again.
[Dm]
[Em] [F]
[Em] [Dm] [C]
[Dm] Second ending.
[Em] [G]
[C]
Alright, now we have the next part which is kind of,
[F#] [G]
so he just kind of does this bass
line, [Am]
[G] G, the low E string, third fret, [A] open A [C] and to C major.
Now you can just do the bass line if you want or you can just, I like to hit the C chord
on the last note.
[E] Alright, so after he does that for a while then he has this.
[F] [G]
[F] [C]
[E] Alright, so we have that bass line that goes up from the open E, then first [F] fret, [G] then
the G, then you can end this with two different ways.
You can end it like we did the
[C] main progression which sounds nice and then on the recording
there's also kind of this [F] type of sound where you have [C] a F major with C in the bass which
[F] is just that same F [C] chord but just with a C [F] [C] down to a C major chord.
Alright, so there's only one other part to the song and it's doing that F major [F] chord
[C] with a C in the bass.
So it's just pretty much playing F bar chord and then you can just do the smaller bar and
just have C in the [F] bass and then from [C] there to a C major and this is at the end of the
song [F] where it's [C]
[G] [F] [C]
kind of rotate between those two [F] chords.
[C]
[F] [C]
We kind [E] of do it all the way through the end of the song.
So that's about it.
This is not the most simple arrangement of it.
I just wanted to make it sound as nice as possible.
So hopefully you enjoyed it.
I'll see you again soon for guitarlessons365.com.
Bye bye.
