Hey everyone, this is Jim and this is my tutorial video on how to play Lay Me Down by James Raymond.
And here we go with the introduction.
Open E chord.
[Eb]
[Ab] In the lower right you'll see the frets.
X means don't play the string, zero [Abm] means open.
[Eb] Goes from low E string to the [Ebm] high E string.
Right here is a pull off.
[Db] [Ab] I'm doing it really slow so hopefully [Gb] you can see how it's picked and you can [Ebm] also see the [Gb] frets.
[Eb] And repeat.
You'll also notice that [Ab] I'm using a flat pick.
I actually [Abm] got this from the [Eb] Crosby [Eb] and Nash Live [Gb] DVD.
It has some pretty good close ups [Db] of a guitar player.
And there's also a [Ab] number of different tunings out there on YouTube.
Dadgad, [Gb] Drop D.
This is actually standard [Ebm] tuning and that's the way it was played [Gb] on the DVD.
And I actually find it the easiest to [Eb] play.
I actually learned it also in Dadgad and I played it that way for a while.
But I think this is a lot easier.
Going into the verse.
[Cm]
[Bbm] And we got a B minor but with an open E.
[Eb] I'm going into an E minor [Ab] with a G in the bass.
[Ebm]
[Ab] A suspended and A major.
[Eb] Here the pinky is unnecessary.
It's just [Bbm] protecting from playing an [Gb] open G [C] when [F] you have that open E chord.
You don't have to use the pinky.
You [Bb] can just do [Db] [Bb] the
[Ab] A suspended [F] and A major.
[Ab] [Eb] And here we go again with the verse.
[Bbm]
[Ebm] The [Ab] vocals are harmonizing here.
Just [Eb] two voices.
[Gb] [C]
[Ab] D9. D9.
[Ab] And there's the A suspended again.
And here's the [Eb] refrain which is in the guitar the same as the introduction.
[Ab]
[Eb] [Db] Pull off.
[Ab]
[Gb] And who knows?
The song may not have been played [Eb] the same way on the [Ab]
original recording.
But [Eb] [Gb] this seems to do the trick.
[Db]
This is a slide.
[Gb] A major.
E and a [Ebm] C9.
[Eb] You see I don't have the pinky but again the [Ab] pinky is just insurance.
[B]
And here's the second part of the refrain.
These are new chords.
There's a C with an A in [Bb] it.
And here's just a D minor with a G on [Ebm] top.
And [F] then a G major 7th.
[Gb] [Ab]
This is wrong.
This should have had an F sharp in it.
[B] My fault. Sorry.
[Ebm] I was doing it from memory and I just forgot.
[Eb]
[Ab]
Got an A on top this time.
[Db] [B]
[Ab] [Abm]
[Ebm] [Gb]
And we [Ab] go [B] back [Gb] [Eb]
to the verse.
And actually that's it except for the very last verse there's a change.
One chord is different.
So I'm just going to show you that real quickly.
Start out the verse as usual with the open E.
Here I didn't use the [Bbm] pinky insurance.
[Ebm] E minor.
E minor with the G on the bass.
And [G] going to our A [Ab] suspended as usual.
And then right here there's a G sharp and an F sharp with a B and an E [Bbm] on top.
[Eb]
Sorry that G is ringing.
It shouldn't.
It's ringing against the F sharp which is where the bad dissonance was.
So it shouldn't be there.
[Ab]
[Gb] And then you continue the verse as usual.
[F] [Ab]
I think I'm going to play it through one more [Cm] time just so you can hear this [Eb] new chord.
Here we go.
[Bbm] E minor.
[Ebm] E with the G on the bass.
[Eb]
And here's the [Cm] new chord right [Bb] here.
And that's it.
Hope you [Gb] enjoyed it.
