Sad news for me, sad news for many of us this last week.
One of my heroes, [F#] UU Tuff Phillips, [A#] passed away
[A] a week ago on Friday, [B] I think.
And he'd been dealing with congestive heart failure for 10 years,
so he did a pretty good job of hanging in with it for a long [B] time.
And I just [A] been thinking about him a lot, [B] thinking about the many great songs he left behind
for us [E] to sing and the many incredible [Bm] tales he used to tell.
[G] And I'd like to do a song that he wrote.
We [A] haven't really played it much.
In fact, [D] we've played it about halfway through [A] one time.
We'll see what [G] happens.
If we stop in the middle, you'll understand.
[Em] He wrote this song for one of his heroes,
a guy named Ammon Hennessy, who, he said, taught him
pacifism and community [Cm] organizing and
[B] [Gm] also many [C] lessons like
[A] never, never [A#] have living [C] heroes.
Just wait till they [F#] die so that you can make sure [A#] they don't screw up
[Bm] [Dm] before you pronounce them a hero.
[D#] So I will pronounce right now [C] UU Tuff Phillips as one of my big heroes.
[B] [B] It was safe to do a [F#] long time ago.
[N]
This song is called Going [G] Away.
Utah said he wrote it.
[C#] Originally, he put it, [D#m] he wrote it as if it were to a woman because he [F#] figured that [Bm] maybe
people [D] wouldn't understand that he [B] was singing to
this hero [A#] of his, Ammon Hennessy.
[Bm] So he said, it's up to [D#] us now to [N] change the,
change it to you instead of her.
So I'm doing that, sending that to Utah.

I know [E] you're gone
whatever
[B] I say
and it [E] won't be long
till [B] I make [F#] up [E] my mind
to go [B]

is that the sun [E] coming up
on the [B] eastern shore

blind old fool's [G#m] caught
out on the [C#] trestle
he can't move up
[A#m] he [C#] can't move back
[F#] the train captain come and pushed him off the train
other storms [E] may blow
and the wind may [B] rise
still I [E] long to go
where the fast mail flies
[B] [Bm] I know [E] you're gone
