[F] [Gm] Hey [C] friends, Joe here at Reverb.com.
Taking a look at some Robert Fripp stuff.
In this lesson we are going to learn part of the solo of 21st Century Schizoid Man.
As you probably know, Robert Fripp was a founding member of King Crimson.
Court of the Crimson King was a colossal record, very influential.
And this riff is, I find it to be very relatable.
It is up-tempo, but it's pretty simple.
And I think it can be applied to a lot of different genres and styles.
I'm playing a Fender Strat going through an Orange Rocker 32, and I plugged in a Brothers
pedal from Chase Bliss Audio for a little bit of drive.
One two three, one two three.
[B] [Bb] [C]
[E] [Gb] [Gm] [C]
[B] [Cm] [F]
[Gm] [C] It does have kind of an abrupt ending there, but if you know the tune, you know it does
go on to then another amazing instrumental section and everything.
So we are in the key of C, and we're going to be in this position down here, third fret
of the A string.
[Eb] [E] [F] So that figure, I like to go down up up up on that root.
[C]
That's kind of the way that I feel like it should snap.
[Eb] [E] [F]
[Eb] Chromatic there on the D string, one two and three.
[E] [F] [C] Back to the root.
Chromatic down, two to one, and then third fret on the E.
[B] [Bb] [G] [Ab] [C]
[Eb] [E] [F] [C]
[B] [Bb] [G] [C] Third riff is the same as the first.
[A] [E] [F]
And then we have this figure here going from four to five, and then third fret on the [Gb] G.
[Gm] [Gb]
[Gm] [Gb] That happens three times.
I think it's important to keep a down up down up down up, even though that kind of alters
your direction, but I think it has a good kind of push and pull to it.
[Gm] [Gb] [Gm] [Gb]
[Gm] [Gb] [Gm] [Gb] [Gm]
And then it goes back to five, and then chromatic from three to five on the G string.
[B] [C] And then right when you hit the fifth fret on the G string there, it's the same riff
in the next octave.
So the whole first part of the riff is in the lower octave.
[Eb] [E] [F]
[C] [B] [Bb] [G] [C]
[Eb] [E] [F] [Gm]
[B] [C] From that note, we can continue the riff in the next octave.
[Cm] [E] [Fm] Four [E] five six there.
[F] [C]
[B] [Bb] [G] [C]
[E] [Fm] And then our figure is going to be here, seven to eight, and then six on [Gb] the E.
[Eb] [Cm]
[F] [C]
[B] [Gm] [C] [E] [Dm]
[Gm] [C] Let's put both the parts together at a slow tempo.
One two three, one two three.
[Eb] [E] [F] [C]
[B] [Bb] [G] [C]
[Eb] [E] [F] [Gm] [Gb]
[Gm] [Bm] [C] [A] [E]
[F] [C] [B] [Gm]
[Cm] [E]
[Gb] [Eb] [Gb] [Gm]
Up to tempo.
[C] One two three, one two three.
[Gm] [C]
[Eb] [F] [Gm] [C]
[Gm] [Cm]
[F] [Gm] Once again, kind of an abrupt ending, but I think that a big takeaway from these lessons
is not just learning how to play the performance like it was on the record.
It's learning a little bit about the shapes, about the language, so that you can apply
that to your own stuff.
We have a couple other videos on the site as well.
I hope you learned something today, and thanks for watching.
