[E] We love the blues musicians, [N] you know, because we love the blues.
I mean, you know, the music we do is, everything we do is based in the blues and sometimes
we do like some traditional blues, but a lot of times we do like a hybrid of blues and
rock, you know, but our hearts are really with the blues.
So we wanted to go find some of the most authentic blues musicians in the country.
We wanted to go, rather than like fly them all out to the studio and like do a, you know,
a session with them, we wanted to do something more real and substantial.
So we actually loaded a bus up with a bunch of recording gear and we had another bus with
a film crew and we set out along the south and we went, every day we were in a different
spot and we went to these guys' houses and we would like set up in their living room
or on their front porch or in the backyard or sometimes in a neighborhood blues bar and
we would just play with them.
It was totally unrehearsed and just live and spontaneous on the spot and we made a
documentary film and a record doing it.
So it's a CD and DVD combo and you get the documentary and the disc with like 15 songs,
all recorded, the way you hear it is exactly how it went down.
And we had, you know, some of the coolest people in blues music, you know, we had BB
King is on there and Pinetop Perkins and the guys from Muddy Waters Band and Hubert Sumlin
and the guys from Howlin' Wolves Band.
Then there was also, and Gate Mouth Brown, but then there was also like, the goal for
me was to discover some blues talent that even I wasn't necessarily aware of and so
there's like a handful of blues artists that have been playing the music their whole lives
but you probably never heard of some of them for whatever reason and like Neil Patman and
Cootie Stark and Etta Baker and stuff.
And these people are really talented but for whatever reason they didn't have that big
break so they're not like a household name like BB King but we wanted to incorporate
them into the project with legendary people like BB King and maybe hopefully help elevate
those people to legendary status.
Sure, sure.
And you know, one of the things about that is actually like two days ago I think Pinetop
Perkins passed away.
Yeah, and actually when you were working on that project a couple of the people that appeared
had passed in the making of that too.
Yeah, well now that Pinetop has passed, of course he was 97 years old, I mean that dude
lived a life, you know, 97 years and he was like chain smoking all the way up until he
passed away, you know.
Eating McDonald's every day.
And talking about women, non-stop.
But you know, a lot of those, there were six of them that passed away before the project
even came out and I think with, now that Pinetop has passed away, that's seven of them.
But you know, it just, I mean we had no idea that that was going to happen but the timing
of the project I think was just amazing because of that and for some of those people it helped
create a legacy for them and for others who already are well known it will help preserve
and you know, their legacy and their music by being a part of that project and I just
feel very fortunate to have been a part of it because you know, for me these guys are
my heroes growing up as a kid and I got to play with them.
Sure, it was really neat and you were talking about your new live album and that is that
show Blues From The Backroads live at House of Blues so if you were unable to be at that
show you can still experience on that live album.
So you are playing tonight at Viper Alley in Lincolnshire and we'd like to get another
taste of what's to offer tonight so what's next for us?
[D] Well this one you guys should probably know, a song called Blue on Black.
Alright.
[G] [D]
[G] [D] Night

Whisper on a scream, [C] [G] doesn't change a thing, don't [A] bring you back.
[G] Blue [D] on black,
[G] oh, [D] blue on black,
[G] [D] blind, [G] oh, [D] now I see the [G]
[D] truth
[G] lies and in [D] between.
[G] [D]
[G] The wrong can't be [D] undone, [G] oh no, no, [D] lotus-leafed,
[G] wrong on the tip of your [D] tongue.
[G] [D] Baby, blue on black, tears on a [C] river, push [G] on a shove, it don't mean much.
