[A] [Am] [A]
People ask me why I took a few years [G] off.
I toured for 24 years and [A] played 200 days a year for a long, long time.
A [D] few [A] years ago, we found out my dad had stomach [G] cancer, so I got off the road
and I just played a couple of shows [A] of mine just to kind of keep things going.
[D] Right before Dad died, Dad made me make him a promise that I would just go back and play and sing
and [G] he'd be there.
He'd be there at every show.
And [A] so I took a little time off and,
[D] [A] you know, just kind of went through the mourning process
[D] and eight months later we get a call.
My sister had suddenly passed away.
[G] So we had a double whammy and it was just [A] a tough time.
And so I took a few years [D] off just to kind of just catch my second wind.
And we stumbled on the song, I'm leaving, a friend of mine called and said,
have you ever heard the song?
No, I said, I mean, I'm a big fan of the guy who sang it.
[G] And he said, well, just you may want to go and take a listen to this thing.
And so [A] we stumbled off and said, look, why don't we just go and cut it?
We'll release it to radio as a promotional thing and we'll give it away.
We'll just make a [Dm] bunch of CDs because [D] I've had a bunch of fans for a long time.
It's been faithful and let's just bless them.
So we did.
We made a bunch of copies and we throw [G] them out at concerts.
[A] And all of a sudden the song takes off on [D] radio and all of [A] a sudden it moved up 200 spots in a week
and just on the national chart.
So it's been crazy.
But I love the song.
[D] And, [E] you know, as a singer, when [G] you're playing it, people singing [A] word for word
and screaming at the high points [D] with you, it's just awesome.
There's a song called I'm leaving.
As we passed in the hall, she said, we need to talk.
[G] I can't go on like this another day.
[A] I froze in my tracks and a chill run up my back.
[G] Because I [D] knew what she was [A] going to say.
[D] She said there's someone else.
I've kept to myself.
But I can't keep this feeling [G] locked inside.
[Em] And I need to tell you [A] this.
[E] It's one of your [A] old friends.
[G] One you [D] haven't talked to [A] in a while.
She said I'm leaving.
[D] And there's nothing you can do.
I [D]
said I [G] had a feeling you found [D] somebody [A] new.
I bet I [G] can guess his [D] name.
[A] But it's so hard to [B] believe.
[E] [A] [G]
She said you're [Em] not even close.
As [G] someone [E] you don't know, [A] I'm leaving you for me.
[D]
[G] I just stood there at a [D] loss for [A] words
trying to catch my breath.
Because [G] I knew that it [D] was over when [A] she said I'm leaving.
[D] [A] And there's nothing you [D] can [A] do.
[D] I said I had [G] a feeling you found somebody [A] new.
And I bet I can guess his name.
But it's so hard to believe.
[G]
She said you're [Em] not even close.
[G] As someone [Em] you don't know, [A]
I'm leaving you for me.
[D] She [G] said you're not [E] even close.
[G] As someone you [E] don't know, [A] I'm leaving you for me.
