[C] Sometimes I do alright, then I remember [Am] how I dreamed it, [G#] how I needed it.
I [C] thought it would be easier.
[Em] My first [G#] audition it was for [C] Don Wise.
Candice walked in, clearly strikingly beautiful, and [Bm] dressed to skateboard [Am] down the beach [Bm] at the Venice Pier.
[F] And I performed [F#] an arrangement that I did of [A] Bonnie Raitt's I Can't Make You Love Me.
And it turns out [E] that he happened to produce that song.
I [C] was like, oh my god, are you kidding me?
So she came in, she sat down at the piano, and blew my mind, man.
It ended up working out [Am] really well.
He loved the arrangement.
It was an exotic package, and [E] we made a deal [B] that first day.
She didn't leave the building without [Em] knowing that we were going to make records together.
[G] That's an honor in itself, too.
So Don Wise, and who is [F#] the president of Blue Note.
[A] Do you know which [F#m] one, destiny [D] or design?
Neither [E] old nor [A] young.
The evolution [C#] from the EP to my [B] new album, we [G#] started with more of a hip hop kind of direction, experimenting with different sounds and stuff.
[A] Eventually I just [G#] kind of stood up and I was like, you know what, I want to try [F#m] going back to what I [A] first started [B] listening to.
Nina Simone, Elvis Jerrold, [F#] kind of stuff, [G] saluting back to those type of artists.
And so the first instinct was to call [C] Larry Klont, who is one of my favorite record producers in the world.
When I heard Candice, I heard [Am] honesty.
It's a very [A] rare quality in singers I [D] find these days.
[C] And I think for me it's something that [G] makes me feel like, [A] OK, I have to work with this.
[C] Sometimes [G] you have to go full circle to come back and find out what you really are.
And this really was [Am] what Candice always wanted to do.
And Larry was the perfect guy [A] to sort of pull it all [C] together.
It was more like old school.
We went in and we all played live at the same [Am] time.
That was a lot of fun.
It was a hell of an experience, too.
Unlike the [C#] modern pop way of making [B] a record where you sit around and overdub one thing after [A] another until you're done,
here the [C] band rehearsed the song for half an [C#] hour and then played it.
And when they did a good take, [A] that's pretty much the record right [C#m] there.
When I finally got a chance to hear some stuff, I was just knocked [B] out.
I mean, the album [C#] exceeded my wildest expectations.
I just think it's [G] the most stunning debut album I've heard from a singer [F#m] in decades.
[A] I'm so happy with it.
[F#] And now here it is.
We'll [B] be gone, they [F#m] will dry.
And [C#m] if you still [E] find them, you can't face [F#m] the world outside.
[D]
[E] Let me be your [B] place to hide.
[A]
So I did a cover of Sam Smith's [E] Stay With Me, and it caught the attention of [A] Prince.
Before I knew it, he was messaging me.
And [E] I was like, oh my God, is this really [A] the purple one?
And literally he called a label up and I'm flying out to Minneapolis a few days later.
And the next day I'm closing a show for the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain.
I was just, oh my God, I can't believe this is happening like once in a lifetime.
A [C] soul.
[F] [Fm]
[F] Soul Eyes, it's a [E] jazz classic.
She [Em] brings to that such a depth [Cm] of experience and really belies her young [A#m] age.
How's [D#] one to know?
[C] Not only is Candice an [F] incredible musician and [N] singer and a stellar auto mechanic.
Old school.
Check out that old intake, dude.
[Am] But she's also [G#] a great fine artist.
Now, look at this.
This is a picture that [C] I have in the office here that she drew of [G] Stevie Wonder.
And she gave [C] it was just on the little pad, man, a little sketch she did while she was [Em] hanging out at Capitol one day.
I thought it would [C] be easy.
[G] [Am] I don't know anybody like Candice Springs.
I can't compare her to anybody.
It's an [G] absolute honor to be a part of Blue Note.
[N] And that was always one of my favorite labels growing up.
And it's always been a dream to be [D] part of them.
And now that I'm a part of them, it's just, you know, I'm [D#] living my dream now.
I believe Candice [A#m] Springs is profound star [F] power.
I know she's an artist who's going to be around [D#] for a very long time.
[C#] I. [D#] You.
