Kamaka Kukona - "Hanu ʻAʻala" with Hula chords
Start Jamming...
This is a little unfamiliar for me.
I just came back from 17 days in Japan.
[G] And three of [G] those days were spent in these [Gm] little dive [G] pubs.
These are the kind of things where you don't really
Like, they're [E] drinking and there's a lot of noise going on and [Gm] you smell cigarette smoke.
So for you guys to just sit there and stare at me, I'm a little [G] bit scared.
[N] So if you could just please indulge me and like, kind of move, a smile.
I [Gm] don't know, something, but right there is not helping me right now.
Smoke a cigarette.
[E]
[D] [G] So as I was saying earlier, [Bb] I spent a good portion of [Gb] my life here on Oa.
[A]
[G] And in 2004, [D] I asked [E] my Kumu if it was time.
[A] And I always get teary-eyed when I think [G] about this because at the time,
I was [A] only 25 years old.
[D]
[C] So in my mind, [G] I was [D] thinking, if I don't do this now, [G] I'm never going to do this.
[D] And deep down in my heart, I was saying, bring it on, I'm ready.
And somewhere in the [Am] middle [G] was a whole bunch of emotion [D] saying,
okay, well, this is where [A] I hang it up, I guess.
And I start on [D] this whole new journey.
Well, it's been 15 years and [G] I'm 40 now.
And our halal has grown from [B] like, 7 people [Bm] to over 300 [C] students in Maui.
[D] I have 14 classes in, starting at [C] age 3 all the way to 92.
[D]
[A] And the three [G] young ladies, well, they're not really young.
But the three women [Dm] here that are going to come [C] before you [E] have been with me through thick and thin.
[Dm] And [G] when it's their time, [D] remember these three faces because these three faces will be the first [Em] three faces to leave our [D] halal with accolades.
And as they journey into their studies, into their formal training,
this [C] song is the beginning of [G] our halal in [D] 2004.
[A] A man by the name of [Em] Dr.
Tuakea Novomire accompanied my [D] kukung into the doors of our halal at the Pucks, [G] what's known as Pucks Alley.
And he brought this [D] chant.
[G] In 2007, I turned this chant into a mele [D] and renamed it Hanum Pa'ali.
