Back in the early 70s before Penny and I met in 1976, I was playing in a folk band in Sydney called the Southern Road Band.
Around the same time Penny was playing in a band called Oak Road String Band, and we already had something in common.
Our bands played this next song.
It's called John Barleycorn Must Die.
And the version that we
used was the wonderful traffic version from their
1970 album John Barleycorn Must Die.
It's classic stuff.
We recorded our version back in 2015 on an album called And Both Shall Row, a shipload of folk songs.
[A] [Bm]
[E] [D] [Bm]
[B] There were three [D] men came out [Bm] of the West
[E] Their fortunes for [B] to try
[Bm] [E] And these [Bm] three men [D] made a [A] solemn [Bm] vow
[E] John [A] Barleycorn must [Bm] die
[D] They ploughed a sole nave [Bm] harrowed in him
Through clods [E] upon [F#] his head
[Em] And these [B] three men [D] made a solemn [Bm] vow
[E] John Barleycorn was [B] dead
[Bm] [E] [D]
[A] [Bm]
[D] [B] [Bm] [E] They've let [B] him lie [D] for [F#m] a very long [Bm] time
[E] Till the rains [D] from heaven did [B] fall
[Bm] [E] And little [B] Sir John sprung up his [Bm] hair
And [E]
so I [A] made them [Bm] all
[D] They let him stand till midsummer's day
[D] Till he looked [E] both [A] pale [F#] and worn
[Em] And little Sir John sprung [D] along [Bm] on gear
And [E] so become a man
[E] [A] [Bm]
[E] [Bm]
[E] They've hired [Bm] men [D] with a side so sharp
[E] To cut [D] him off at the [Bm] knee
They've [B] rolled him and tied [F#m] him [Bm] by the waist
[E] Serving him most [A] barblessly
[Bm]
[D] They've hired men with a [Bm] sharp-edged force
[D] Who pricked [E] him [F#] to the heart
The [C#] loader has [A] served him worse [Bm] than that
[E] For he's [D] bound him to the [Bm] cot
[E] [D] [A] [Bm]
[E] [Bm]
[E] They've [Bm] wheeled him around and [D] around the field
Till [E] they came unto [Bm] a barn
[E] And there they [D] made a solemn [F#] vow
[Bm]
[E] Of poor John [A] [Bm] Barleycorn
[D] They've hired men with [Bm] a cratchy stitch
[D] To cut [E] him [F#] skin from bone
[Em]
The loader has [E] served him [A] worse [Bm] than that
[E] For he's ground him between two [Bm] stone
[E] [D] [A] [Bm]
[E] [Bm]
[E] And little [Bm] Sir John, the nut brown bone
[E] And he's [D] brandy in the [Bm] glass
[E] And little Sir John, the nut [Bm] brown bone
[E] Through the [D] strongest [A] man and [Bm] glass
[D] The huntsman he can hunt the fox
[D] Not so loud [E] he's a blow [G#] his horn
[F#] [Em] For he can't [D] mend his own [Bm] old box
[E] Without a little [A] [F#]
