In this lesson I'm going to talk [N] about playing pentatonic runs in quick bursts.
If you listen to guys like Eric Johnson and Joe Bonamassa, they play these really long
pentatonic runs that are really fast and they pick every single note really articulately.
This lesson is kind of the first foray into that territory where you're playing through
a [C] pentatonic scale and you're picking every note.
There's no legato here, no hammer-ons and pull-offs.
We're picking every note.
This is really challenging if you don't really have the picking hand down.
This is a good first entry into this type of playing.
[D]
We're going to start with the B minor scale and I'm going to show you a few [N] different
easy-ish licks with this technique.
The first lick is [C#] going to start in this [F#] position, the B minor scale.
[B] [D] I'm going to start on the [G] 7th fret on the [A#] 4th string.
From [N] there I'm just going to play, starting with the [A] downstroke, [E] up the scale and landing
on the [D] 7th fret on the 1st string.
[F#]
That's it.
That's the entire lick.
That's going to be tricky if you don't have this picking hand down.
[B] That's the lick.
The [G#m] second lick is [F#] starting on the [D#] 9th fret.
[F#] This one, we're going to start on an upstroke.
It's the same position there.
[C] That's the lick.
It's just one less note.
We're starting on an upstroke this [B] time because [F] that makes it a lot easier to play the rest
of the lick when you come down to the 3rd string with a [B] downstroke.
So, upstroke, then 3rd [B] string, downstroke.
[F#]
[B] That's much [C] easier than starting with a downstroke on the 4th string, [F#]
[E] at least for me.
I [C] start with an upstroke when [F#] I play that lick.
[N] Pretty much the same way, we're just starting a note later.
The final one is simpler and that is [D] basically just a 3-string little lick.
In that one, I'll play it in the same position here.
What we do [B] is we actually skip a note in this one.
We're starting [Fm] on the 9th fret on the 3rd [E] string.
Then we play the 10th [F#] fret on [G] the 2nd string.
We're [D#] skipping that [Dm] note in the scale, the 7th fret on the 2nd string.
[D] So, 10th fret on the 2nd string, and then the 7th fret on the 1st [B] string, 10th fret on the 1st string.
So, that's a little bit shorter of a lick and a little bit easier.
[D#] In that one, I'm starting on a downstroke on the [E] 3rd string.
So,
[B] downstroke [E] on 3rd string, [B] upstroke on 2nd string, then on the 1st string, down-up.
[C] So, those are the [E] basic licks.
To do [F] what I did at the beginning of the video,
you basically practice these in the [G#m] different positions of the scale.
So, I'll take that first [B] lick [E] and I'll play it all the way up [F#] the B minor scale.
[E] [F#]
[C#] [G] I'll do the same thing with the second [D] lick.
So, starting [G#m] on the [F#] 9th fret here, that second lick I did.
[Bm]
[F#] [G#]
[E] And then finally, the last [F#m] lick.
[N]
[B] Some wrong notes there, but you get [E] the idea.
So, [D] we just basically play those different little licks up and down [B] the scale.
[C] That's it.
It's pretty easy to use because you can target notes really easily.
So, if you're playing a solo and you wanted to hit [G#] this note,
and then this note, that note, and then that note,
[D] you can use these little runs to kind of target those notes.
So, [F#] I can do this,
[F] [N] using those little licks.
Maybe I play something a little more [F#] complicated.
[B] [D#] So, it's pretty easy to use that [D] little technique I just did right there
to [D#] squeeze those licks into a little [F#] solo.
[G] So, that's it.
That's a good first [C] way to get into using these type of [A] pentatonic licks.
So, have a lot of fun with these.
