Jerry Jeff Walker interviews Mark Chesnutt 1991 chords
Start Jamming...
Look in [F#] my eyes, it's easy to [A] tell All night
Maybe it was meant to be, [D] maybe it was so that
[B] All music
Cause if love won't fly on its own [E] free will
It's [F#] gonna catch [B] that outbound [E] plane
CMT, Country Music Television, All Right
[N] Now here's Mark Chestnut with Jerry Jeff Walker Thank you
Thanks, this is the part where we kind of sit around
and [G] find out a little bit about where the music all comes [E] from
and [G] maybe how you kind of [G#] latched on to music
How early was music in your life?
Well it was always around
We used to listen to George Jones and Merle Haggard and Hank Williams
That's all I knew, I didn't know there was
This was in Beaumont?
Yeah, back in Beaumont, there was a
Was there music in your [D] family?
Did anybody else?
Yeah, yeah, daddy used to sing
and before I was, until I was 12 years old
I didn't know there was anything but country music
[G] So you made your own music to entertain yourselves
or did you go out and listen to other bands play?
Well, yeah, we did both
We'd sit around and sing, my brother would play guitar
I used to play drums then
So we'd sit around and act [C] silly
and daddy would [B] sing, and that's what we're doing now
Yeah, trying to make a living at it
Yeah, that seems to be a common thread among [E] all the people that come through
is that it starts that way and then all of a sudden maybe you take a hand in it
What about the early bands?
When did you first get up and show off a little bit?
Well I used to sit in with every band that would let me
I sat in at Gillies for about six weeks
[G] and they would never pay me so I quit doing that
Well it's different than sitting in for a song or two and then actually holding down a gig
Yeah, they would ask me to come back, but I'd, you know, like a dummy, I'd go back
[G#] So this was like as an entertainer?
[F#] I mean, you'd actually get on the bill and pull out?
Yeah, [D] and I got smart
So I started, I stayed in Beaumont most of the time
and sang with all the other bands around [A] town
and then I [D] finally put my own band together
probably about six [Em] years ago
and it's the same band [D] that's here with us tonight
most of them
So you play mostly around that area in Beaumont and Houston?
Right, I didn't get in Houston too much
I played mostly in Beaumont and Niederland and Jasper
I bet there's some funky gigs over there
Yeah man, it was crazy
See, most of those were just me and my guitar ho
I didn't even have a band, I played places that weren't even as big as a stage
Yeah, what would you play?
What would you play in something like that?
Say about six years ago
[G] Oh, I used to, one of my favorites was like, [D] say it's been so long, [E] I done forgot the chord
[G] [D]
[A]
[D]
[G] If you wanna be my baby, then you [D] gotta be my baby
[E] And you gotta keep them kissing [D] cousins out
Cause [G] when you're high stepping, [D] I'm crawling low
I get suspicious and I'm gonna tell you so
If you wanna be my baby, you gotta be my [E] baby
And be nobody's [A] baby but [D] mine
Yeah, stuff like that
Alright
You got him fingering two different parts?
I guess, an old George Jones song
So you just kinda get up and stand there and [G#] beat him out on the guitar?
Well I'd sit down like the old school
Carried my own PA system with me, my old truck, I'd throw it on the back of the truck
I was in trouble when it rained though
[G] Really, and it rains over there a lot too
So it's been kinda faster paced since then, hasn't it?
Oh yeah, it got crazy
So you enjoying it?
I love it, traded for the world
Any of these guys from the original band?
Yeah, all except one
Well that's great
Little [E] Japanese guy here
He's the guy that knows who's in [G] tune, the Nintendo freak
[N]
