It [G] doesn't matter where you are.
It doesn't matter where you go.
If [Am] it's a million miles away or just a mile up the road, [G] take it in.
Take it with you when [D] you go.
Who says you can't go home?
Who says you can't go home?
Well, I have to tell you this.
That was country [N] music darling Jennifer Nettles, of course,
in her Grammy-winning duet with rocker Jon Bon Jovi, Who Says You Can't Go Home.
She's exploded onto the country music scene with powerhouse country soul band Sugar Land.
That happened in 2004 and it's been nothing but up really ever since.
The band was nominated for five awards at this year's Country Music Awards
and landed a Best New Artist nomination at this year's Grammys.
And that's artists of any kind.
Jennifer Nettles of Sugar Land joins me now.
It's such a thrill to have you here.
Welcome.
Thank you.
Glad to be here.
You guys are so great.
And it's just been a few years now of really huge success.
What has that been like for you?
It's been fast.
Really fast.
But fun.
And luckily we've had a number of years experience beforehand to build on.
And it's crazy.
You go out there every night and you see these people singing your songs
and singing that back to you and it's a big rush.
I think everybody has that dream of sort of standing on stage and just hearing the roar of that crowd.
What better high is there than that?
I can't imagine.
Not much.
And I think it's why people do it as long as they can.
Absolutely.
You're just rocking away there in that video with Jon Bon Jovi.
And I'm from New Jersey so that's about as good as it gets.
I know.
We were talking and he's so cute.
And we both looked at him and said, oh [C] he's so cute.
So tell me a little about that.
[G] So fun.
Such great guys.
Very smart men.
You know, business minded and interested in country music [D] which is exciting for me and exciting for us
because it says something about the [G] state of music and country music today.
So it was exciting to do.
Sort of cross [Am] over back and forth.
You know, both of [A] us.
But I've read that you [G] love a lot of other kinds of music as well.
[N] That country is not sort of where your heart originally was.
Who were your influences?
Growing up my mom always had the radio on.
So it was like [F] Linda Ronstadt, Rita Coolidge, all these big female singers, Juice Newton.
And then obviously we're from Atlanta so there's a huge hip hop and rap and R&B scene there.
So there's a lot of [N] different influences there between southern gospel and southern rock and folk as well.
What do you want to do?
What haven't you done yet that you really want to do?
You know what?
Honestly, I would love to do Broadway.
I would love to do it.
It is a dream.
We're just a block away.
I know.
I'm going to go over and give a little audition or something.
Is there like a dream role or a show that you loved growing up that you would love to do?
Well, there's one that's actually more present and current than that.
Have you seen Wicked?
Oh, yes.
You'd be fabulous in that.
I want to be Elphaba.
Come on.
Who doesn't want to be painted green?
I think everybody's got a little Wicked witch in them.
Yeah, I think so.
I think so.
You're on tour with Kenny Chesney and that's the biggest sold out tour of any tour right now.
The police are out there.
It's bigger than [G] that.
Yeah, it's huge.
It's huge.
And I was just saying we just went to Homedale and you were saying you were a Jersey girl.
We were just in Homedale, New Jersey and actually [Dm] Bruce Springsteen came and showed up on his [G] bike to the show.
I mean when Bruce Springsteen [G] comes to your show, Kenny has to know [C#] he's doing something right.
Absolutely.
And what's he like?
What's Kenny Chesney like to work with?
Fantastic.
He is a gentleman.
He's a [N] wonderful person and he's been so generous to us.
Well, we were just talking about how exhausting it is to be out there on tour and she said she has one day off tomorrow
but they're few and far between I'm sure.
And so how do you keep fresh?
How do you keep rested?
How do you keep it together?
Yoga. Yoga.
I like to do that.
That helps me physically and mentally and emotionally on all levels I think it helps.
And then you try to get as much sleep as you can.
You try to be smart.
It's not really all the glamour and rock and roll that you think it might be partying.
And I know that you use these to keep your teeth white.
Look at these.
Yes, you got to check them out.
Listerine White.
This is your thing right now.
You were asking me about it and they're super easy and they're super fun and it's a fun partnership for me.
And you put them on your teeth and you don't have to take them off.
They just dissolve in your mouth.
So there's no brushing.
There's no goo.
There's nothing.
Quick and easy.
Check them out.
Alright Jennifer Nettles, thank you.
It was really a pleasure to meet you.
Thank you so much for having me.
Come to our show.
Good luck with everything.
We'd love to.
