I grew up on Maui in a town called Mocowau and it's a
Paniolo town up on the mountain, Jalacala Mountain.
My father worked at the ranch there.
And lots of [A] Portuguese there.
And so I'd like to play a Portuguese song [Gm] called Chamarita, [G] Malasadas.
[D]
I just had the opportunity earlier this year to go to
Brazil and I did a tour with the State Department.
It's very interesting.
With Keola Beamer and his wife, Lonnie Beamer, we went
all over the country, 10 different [B] cities, spent a
whole month in the country.
And I couldn't believe we have cousins, musical cousins up in
Brazil where there's, of course, an ukulele like Benny
was just playing.
They have the Cavaquinho.
And that evolved from the [N] same instrument that came.
It's called the Braguinha.
It came from Portugal.
They also have a Portuguese-style guitar.
It's called the Viola Caipira.
I'd never heard of it before.
I'd never seen it.
They have about 20 different open tunings that they use.
So we have our slack key cousins over there in [G] Brazil.
