Somebody asked me [Gm] the other day, what is the difference between a good guitarist and a great guitarist?
And I think it's being able to tap into the God form.
Being able to channel [C] is an important part of [B] any creative process.
[F] [Bb]
[G]
[Ab] [G] Today we are working on a record that features Steve Ferroni [C] playing [G] drums,
Brian Auger [Bb] and [G] Derek Frank, [Em] plus it features me obviously, [Am] Jeff Golem.
[F] I'm Bud Harner, [E] I'm [F] Jeff's manager and co-producer on this project.
What we've been talking about for quite a while, [C] Jeff and I, is to do a record that has [Dm] the Hammond B3 and the guitar as the sort of featured [G] instruments.
So I had the opportunity to meet Brian Auger.
[C] So [G] I brought up the idea of having Brian [F] be the [Em] B3 and play Pender Rhodes and stuff too on [G] the album.
Jeff loved the idea and the [C] label loved the idea, so [Dm] that's what we're doing.
[G]
[Am] [B] Well my name [Gb] is Brian [Gm] Auger and we're making an album for [C] Jeff Golem.
[G] Bud sent me over Jeff's albums, [F] so I had to listen to that music [G] and then I thought, wow, [Em] this is really cool man.
So [Bb] I [F] called Bud and I said, yeah, count me in, I want to do the project.
[G] Well my name is Stephen Ferroni and I'm here recording with Jeff Golem.
[E] Well I've played on a lot [F] of records with Jeff, I've done a lot of his records.
I love playing [Em] with Jeff, it's [C] an honor to be called by him every time, he's a great musician.
[Ab]
[G] [Em] I'm [C] Derek Frank, [Ab] I'm a bass player, [G] playing here today [C] recording [Dm] Jeff's next record.
I toured with Jeff all of 2012 and I [Gm] had toured with Brian Auger, the keyboard player, [Em] from 2002 to about 2010, [G] off and on.
So I've been [B] a part of Brian's thing for [F] a long time and kind of [G] a new part of Jeff's thing.
[C]
[G] Luckily they asked me to do the [F] record, thought it might [Bb] be a good fit.
[F]
Powerhouse group of musicians.
[G] We all know one another, we've already played together, you [Em] know, and we're [Gm] all buddies, so I mean, kind of like a family happening.
It feels great to be playing with these guys, I [Cm] mean they're all great musicians.
[Gm] It's just a [C] joy to be in the same studio with them.
[E]
[Dm] [B] [F]
The vibe of the new record is soul jazz.
It's a [Fm] lot of Latin grooves, a lot of grooves period.
[Bb] My last couple of records have been [F] blues records, especially the last [Eb] record was straight ahead blues.
But [C] now [Bb] I'm kind of going back [Fm] to what I did before that, like soul jazz.
I mean, no matter what I do, it's blues oriented [Bb] guitar, but the record [Ab] itself is music that's [Eb] more jazz oriented.
You know, the whole thing of the [Fm] Hammond B3 and the guitar, the Fender Rhodes, it's got a [Eb] retro kind of [Fm] funky groove type vibe.
Jeff [F] is [Abm] just one of the [C] best blues guitarists [Bb] out there.
[Fm] So this definitely still has a bluesy edge to it, but it's got more of a funky groove than the standard blues approach.
Between Jeff and Brian there's definitely kind of like an old [Eb] school vibe, like an old school [F] soul, funk, blues [B] R&B kind of vibe, which [Bb] I love playing.
I get to bust out my [F] vintage basses and play with that kind of tone.
Brian's got the [Cm] B3 going, he's [Gm] got the Rhodes [Ab] going, [F] and then we've got Steve Ferron who's just [Eb] a rock of a drummer, just [Am] solid as they come.
[Bb] [Fm] Jeff is such a great kind of [B] raw bluesy kind [Cm] of guitar [C] player, [Gm] real soulful [Abm] player.
And [C] [Eb] yeah, [F] it's just a great combination of people and we're having a lot [G] of fun.
[C] [Db]
[Dm] [G]
Jeff's a genuine, really warm person.
We've known each other a long time.
[C] He's just a genuine, humble, down to earth guy.
You know, there's just nothing unreal [G] about Jeff and it continues [C] [G] even after [Em] the loss of his sight.
[A] He still has the same [C] positive attitude and a [G] smile on his face.
He's a [C] wonderful guy.
[Db]
[D] He's always been a wonderful [Bb] guy and a close friend.
[G] To go through what he's gone through, he has even more of [Bb] my admiration.
[D] He's a [G] positive person.
He's a very sweet guy, very [Ebm] nice [C] guy.
It's just been an incredibly happy experience for everybody.
[G] I count [C] this, [G] you can be [Em] the best musician in the world, but if [A] you're a nasty piece [C] of work, that's what you are.
I don't really [G] want to play with you.
I don't [C] have to.
[Dbm] [C] So, the fact that he's a great human being, that really kind [F] of adds to it.
It [Gb] [Em] speaks very [F] much to me.
[G] Well, they've been great about my [C] lack of sight.
My audience has really been understanding.
[G] I'm hoping to give them [F] a record [C] that they can relate to.
[A] That it's [C] sort of for everybody.
[G] [C] [Eb]
