Hey folks, in this video I'm going to [G] try and demonstrate how to take scales that you know
and turn them into melodies.
So [Eb] let's just start with any old scale.
Let's start with Bb major.
So here's the Bb major scale.
[F]
[Fm] [N] The most important notes in a scale are the chord counts.
I'm going
to be improvising based on a Bb major chord.
So the Bb major 7 chord is [Bb] like this.
So maybe
maybe there's a piano player playing that chord somewhere.
What I'm going to do is start and end
short phrases using the chord tones to begin and end and using the scaler notes to pass through.
So let me just, I'll do it at a slow tempo.
One, [A] two.
[Ab] [G] [F]
[G] [Bb] [F]
[Bb]
[F] [G] [Bb]
Okay, so now I'm going to take the same scale,
Bb major scale, but the chord in the background is going to be a C minor.
So it's going to end
up being C dorian.
So the scale is still this.
[Em] The chord is [Cm] now this.
Alright, C, Bb, G, Bb.
[Ab]
So now I'll play on that.
One, two, [Bb] a one, two, three, [Cm] four.
[D] [Eb]
[F] [G] [Cm]
[D] [Cm] [Bb]
[Eb] [Cm] [A] [Gm] [Cm] [Bb]
[Eb] [Cm]
Now I'm going to make a little combination.
I'll do four bars of Bb, four bars of C minor.
So it'll
just go from the one chord to the two chord.
One,
[F] [Bb] [F]
[Bb] [F] [Bb]
[Cm]
[A] [Cm]
[Gm] [Cm] [Gm] [G] [Bb]
[Cm] [Dm] [Bb] [A]
[F] [Bb] [Cm] [Eb]
[Cm] [Eb]
[Cm] [F] [Bb]
two, three, four.
[G] I guess the last thing that I
would point out is that it is very important to practice these things slowly.
[Bb] And I really
believe in slow improvising practice.
[F] [Bb] [F]
[G] [Bb] [F]
[Bb] [F] [Gm]
[Dm] [Cm] [Gm] [C]
[Gm] [C] [Gm] [B] [C]
[Eb] [Cm]
and turn them into melodies.
So [Eb] let's just start with any old scale.
Let's start with Bb major.
