I equated it to like a nursery rhyme
I don't know why that is I think because it was written in such primary colors
It wasn't originally written as a love song
it was written more out of this just joy of singing closed my eyes and singing to the great unknown and
To that higher power saying make me an instrument.

I was actually playing an electric guitar
A lot of people think I wrote it on an ukulele on an island somewhere
But I was home and I had visited Jamaica and I had visited Hawaii in previous months.
I was influenced by [B] the islands _

I was tickled by the song

A to Z
I [B] just I put it aside thinking this is cute and in [F#] 2005 I started playing it [G#m] live and

A to Z came out and we were touring and I put my little I'm yours [E] demo on my [B] myspace page
It really started to click and
connect [F#] all around the world and by
[E] 2007 when I was making we sing we dance we steal things
Obvious to [C#] all of us that I'm yours needed a home it needed a birthday
[E] So we recorded it for that album doing our best to just copy the original demo
so it was the love the little love song that
[F] It just revealed itself one [B] summer afternoon in 2004

I'd put it [G#m] out in 2008 and it [F#] just went to the moon and [E] it's continued to delight and tickle me
[F] _ _ _ [B] I've been spending way too long checking my tongue in [F#] the mirror and bending over backwards just to try to see a [G#m] clip

This song is about letting go and trying not to be in my own way while I create something
While I sing something while I hand myself over
It's about ultimate surrender and

Vanity is something that gets in my way or gets in anyone's way

All right is my hair fine and and so that [B] verse was like look I've just been looking at myself way too long
It's time to [F#] throw vanity aside and just go with the flow go with whatever [G#m] season it is today

The song came out of [B] my own southern vernacular in the second verse
[F#] It's like it's our godforsaken right to be loved [G#m] which is weird
It's like I'm almost cursing [E] in saying we have a right to be loved [B] not even
understanding fully that
[F#] what godforsaken right even meant but it's just [G#m] part of my vernacular to to have kind [E] of
Turned that phrase really quickly.
[B] And so when I hear other songwriters covering it
perplexed [F#] because the song is so
[G#m] deeply in my
[B] vocabulary [E] and in a way it kind of represented to me or [B] it proved to me that
The more personal the song is the more [F#] universal it can actually become
Because the [G#m] humanity really speaks through
a [E] personal song
