I knew that it was important and meaningful [Dm] that I write a song about [E] my divorce on this
record and
[Bm] that song is [A] called Death Without a Funeral.
[G] It's called that [A] because
[D] grieving a divorce is [Am] complicated because there aren't [F#m] a lot
of clear
[E] signifying markers that something has come to an [D] end.
Like if a loved one dies, [E] there's a funeral service where you say goodbye, you have [A] closure,
friends gather around you and you kind of have the moment.
[D]
[F#m] When a divorce happens, I think friends kind of [Bm] don't know [D] what to do
[Am] and [D] there aren't
clear ending [F#m] markers and so it makes [D] grief complicated, which means it makes healing [A] complicated.
So, Death Without a Funeral is [D] in essence, I guess, my funeral service for [Em] something
that I loved very [D] much, which [A] was my family.
[D] And I figured if I need that kind of song, I'm sure someone else does too.
[B] The [D] closing verse, [Am]
about a year after
[D] my divorce, I was leaving my house [F#m] and I [G#] saw that there
was one [Bm] apple left [F#m]
in the apple [G] tree that we had planted [D] together.
And something in my heart, I just had a sense I was supposed to go pick that apple and I
was supposed to eat it.
And so I went up there and I pulled it down, I climbed up there, I got the apple, I hopped
in my car [D] and I was about an hour down the road and
[G] I didn't know why I was [D] supposed
to do it, I just had a sense I was supposed to do this thing and that it would mean something
[G] and I didn't know what it [E] would mean, but I trusted that it would [D] be [A] meaningful.
And I [D] remember I got the apple and there was [G] [D] pain, there was anger, there was confusion,
all of it in that moment.
[E] And I bit into [D] it [A] and I started crying.
[D]
[G] And I guess I was [D] surprised at how good the apple tasted, [E] it still tasted good.
[D]
What [A] does that mean?
I think I know what it means in my story.
I think I'm still discovering what that moment meant.
[G#]
And when I've played it for others, [A] I think it's meant something [G#] [A] different for each of
them so [G#] I guess [A] I'll [F#m] leave that to you to decide [E] [G] what that last verse means [Bm] for you.
But
[A] that's my song, [Bm] In Death Without a Funeral.
