[Ab] Jan and Dean are back together [Db] again after 13 years.
Actually, they insist they never really broke [Ab] up.
It's just that their career was put on hold after [B] Jan's near fatal car accident in [Gb] 1966.
In fact, [Eb] of the two, it seems that Jan was so eager to start [Ab] performing again that he
went on tour with his own band last summer.
And before too long, says Dean, he began hearing reports that Jan was appearing around the
country with some other guy named Dean.
What really happened was he went out on the road with his own band and [G] supposedly it was
supposed to be called Jan Berry [Em] and his band Aloha.
And an agent got [F] involved that could see that he could get a lot more money for the act
if it was Jan and Dean than [Gb] Jan Berry.
And suddenly Jan and the fake Dean were being billed everywhere they appeared as [Ab] the original
Jan and Dean.
And then later the agent really got involved and started, without Jan's knowledge, started
sending out promo packs [Gb] with a picture of this other guy [Ab] saying this was Dean, only
Dean was [D] written in quotes.
You know, and that [Eb] was like, he said, well, that was the [N] guy's nickname.
This time around, however, Jan, whose speech and physical coordination is still impaired,
wasn't so sure he could readjust.
And he [Gbm] says, the main [Ab] thing last [E] summer was like [Gb] therapy for me.
It really was.
And I [B] got on the [D] stage and it was scary at first, but I started getting used [Ab] to it.
I think it was [F] extremely important for him to do it.
And I, [G] you know, I look [Ebm] back and say it was the best thing for him to do [Ab] at the time.
And again, you know, I mean, I was aware [G] of it.
I was aware that there [F] was a fake Dean.
I never did [G] anything about it.
You know, I mean, I could have could have gotten an injunction and [Eb] gotten some lawyers
down upon the situation.
But it didn't really [A] make any difference.
It [Ab] was good for Jan.
[A] And since [F] I wasn't doing it, you know, somebody should have [G] been doing it.
Grab [A] your board and go sidewalk surfing [Eb] with me.
You [Bb] know, high school, Jan tried [Eb] to come back recently with another partner, but of course
it [F] wasn't the same thing as having the real Dean.
Now [B] Dean has agreed to join him.
We're going to watch that performance tonight.
[F] We'll talk to Jan about his long battle with brain damage.
Come back, we'll find out about Jan's experiences with aphasia and we'll hear [B] the new sound
of Jan [F] and Dean.
Do you think there will be [G] big money in it?
Oh, I have no idea.
Who cares?
[A] It's just really a lot of [B] fun and the people seem to want to see it.
And [E] if somebody wants [Gb] to see it, we're glad to do it.
[F] Your kind of music seems to be catching on again, very big with kids.
Do you have an explanation for that?
No, I really wish there was.
But there probably is no [G] real, I don't think a real [Bb] definitive answer to why the [E] music
is still around.
But basically, probably because it's real [B] simple, fun, not very complicated rock and [G] roll.
[N] Jan, are you back to, are you glad to be back with this guy here?
Well, yeah, it was [Ab] a treat for [Db] Dean.
It's a [G] treat for me.
He's paying me a lot of money.
No, I [F] like it to be back with Dean and also, also, also, [Em] we'll be playing [E] another concerts
by themselves and then we're going to [A] join other, to the [Ab] team again.
But I think it's really [A] a nice experience and [F] really a great response.
Good.
[Fm] After your accident, were you [B] in a bad state of mind?
Did you, were you [Gb] despairing?
Well, I had a lot [G] of bad
A lot of headaches.
[F] Yeah.
I, you know, I couldn't really talk the first time when I had an accident.
I had the accident in my [G] Corvette and I was wiped out.
And of course I couldn't remember because it was so hard to [G] impact when I had the accident
and I can't remember a while back.
It was a
It's kind of like a [Fm] form of amnesia.
He doesn't really, really remember [Abm] the accident at all except for what he was told.
[Gb] Can you write songs now?
Oh, yeah.
I'm doing that right now.
You don't have to [F] sing one right now.
No, I [Gb] don't want to.
If speech is, [N] still has some difficulties for you, I guess, just to clarify it, there's
nothing wrong with your brain.
You think just fine.
The problem is in putting it into words.
Is that it?
More or less.
That's right.
[B] It's a weird thing.
It's [Gb] like I had to grow [F] from a baby all over again and grow up again.
And [A] she said, you know, every day I had new [Db] things to [F] think of.
And [Bb] it was pretty hard.
And I think that as I [G] grow on, I'm going to go into the [Gb] family and it'll be this.
This thing's going to have a lot of fun in the future, I think.
And [G] we'll see.
OK, I hope you have a lot of fun tonight.
Thanks.
Glad you could make it.
