Start Jamming...
Hi guys, I'm James Berkeley and today I'm going to show you how to play Runaway by the amazing Jamiroquai.
It's quite an easy song today, I'm going to split it into three parts.
We're going to be using the same part in the verses, same part in the choruses and then
just a little riff to start us off with.
So Jamiroquai's guitarist is a guy called Rob Harris, he's one of my favourite guitarists.
He generally uses a Strat and today we're going to be getting with his clean tone.
So I'm going to be using my Strat on middle pickup and bridge pickup.
So the guitar comes in in the intro, in fact it might not even be a guitar, it's still
got an effect on it, I think it might be like a sitar effect or something but I'll show
you how you play it on a guitar anyway.
So we're going to be in C and I think I've looked it up and it's something like the Sarabatti
scale but I wouldn't really think about that to be honest, I'd think of it as C major and
then just adding on the flat 6 as well.
Ok so I'll show you how that riff goes.
So we start on C.
[C] [G] [Ab]
[F] [C]
[Eb] So the first passage [E] you're going through the major scale, so you've got [C] root, 3rd and
5th, [G]
sorry root, [C] 3rd, 4th, 5th.
[G]
And the next part you've got 4, 5, flat 6.
[Ab] [G] [C]
I'm on my bridge pickup, so I'll play that at normal speed.
[G] [Abm] [G] [C]
Ok so you see I start with my 2nd finger, right to the major scale, [G] shift the position
[Ab] up
[C] and end on my 1st finger as well.
Ok so now we go to the verse.
The chord, I think there's 4 chords you go between.
We're going to start with just a C major or the top half of a C major.
Like this.
The
[D] 2nd chord we're going to do it is [G] Csus2.
[Ab] The next chord is an Abmaj7 but [D] we're going to do the top part again so that's
[Cm] [Bb]
[A] Ok and the final chord it would be a Gsus4, exactly the same as a Csus2 there.
[F] The reason it's different chords is because the bass is doing a different [G] note.
Alright so it would be like this.
[Abm] So the full chord would [C] sound
[A]
[Ab] [G]
[Ab] We're going to be [C] going
[Cm]
[N] Ok.
Now the rhythm is important, it's more about the groove and the feel of this sort of song.
So although this is quite simple make sure you practice to get it right.
So I'm going to be using pretty much 16th notes all the way through so when I'm not
playing my hand will still be going in the rhythm just to try and keep the timing.
So here it is.
[C]
[N] That's the general rhythm for the verse.
So I'll slow it down for you now.
[C] [F]
[Cm] [C]
[D] [Gm]
So because my [C] right hand is always moving the 16th notes I'm doing downstrokes on the
on beats and upstrokes off the off beats.
Also I'm taking the pressure off my fingers when I'm not playing the notes, [N] when I'm
post-noting.
So they still stay over the frets, they just take the pressure off.
Otherwise you might get a lot of ringing strings going on.
So that's the verse dealt with.
Now we're going to move on to the chorus which is actually nice and easy as well.
[B] We're still in C and we're going to be going up to the 8th fret on [C] the E string and doing
little chips on the top two strings.
So I'm going to be in the E.
[Db]
Ok.
And all of the different, that's the [Cm] only chord in the chorus but it's just a matter
of how you play it in the rhythm.
So you've got.
[D]
[A] And [Ab] that repeats those two phrases.
So as you might see in between I'm sliding up on the D string.
That doesn't really matter [D] where you slide to, it's more for the sound effect.
So if I speed that up to regular speed it would sound something like this.
[C]
[Cm]
And there you have it.
That's how to play Run Away by Jamiroquai.
[Fm] Thanks for watching.
