[E] [G] [C]
[G] My hardcore band broke up deep blue and I was playing drums and we decided that
you know [Dm] hardcore was kind of dead and we wanted to try [G] some new kind of music and
I was gonna switch to guitar so I needed a guitar and [Dm] [G] you know I painted the
[D] house next door [G] for the summer to kind of get money to buy a guitar and I had
like [D] $400 I wanted to buy a Strat I decided that I [Ab] somehow that [D] maybe that
was the guitar for me because it kind [G] of you know I wanted an electric guitar but
I wanted to be able to strum it to kind of folky [A] right kind of folky songs and I
thought Fender was more kind of a good strumming guitar.
[F] [Bb] I've been lying [F] softly.
[C] So there's this [F] paper that had ads from this guitar shop Slimy Bob's Guitar Ripoff
and he [C] was in Connecticut like an hour and [F] a half away or something and [Dm] you know
it said he had a [F] Strat for $400 [C] in the paper he had like you know 10 or 12 different
ads which was before there were like a [C] lot of cheap Strats so that was like
pretty cheap there weren't [Dm] any like Mexican or Japanese or Squires or anything
this was like $83 so I went to the [C] store and of course when I got there he's like
oh no [Dm] the Strat's $450 you know once you get drive an hour and a half and [Bb] so I was
like I don't have [Dm] that much and he's like well [C] we have this you know Jazzmaster
for $300 and [F] Jaguar for $200 so I decided to pay [C] the extra $100 and get the Jazzmaster
[F] although I thought the [Bb] Jaguar looked a little [F] better but [C] the Jazzmaster with the
[F] longer neck and the [Bb] worn out neck and the [F] Grovers that was worth it you know [C] the
only person I ever thought of with the [Bb] Jazzmaster at that point was Elvis
[F] Costello was the only person I could [C] think of so I learned how to play on the [F] guitar
you know and I used the whammy [Dm] bar a lot and switch the pickup [Dm] so for the songs I
was writing so it became like part of my [D] style started to play like dinosaur [C] songs
on another guitar [Dm] because you know I wrote them [C] on the guitar yeah just [E] the
whole setup I [C] was used to so [Dm] it kind of became my guitar because that's the only
one I [C] had but I bought you know [D] other guitars over the years but [C] live
live especially for the [D] dinosaur songs I can only play [G] the Jazzmaster [Bb] I just
never got a strat because it was always [D] a little bit more than I was willing to
pay for [C] a guitar every time [Dm] so I wanted to [G] get an old one you know like a 50s
one or [Bb] something then it was like $2,500 and I only wanted to spend like [D] a
thousand and then [Bb] ten thousand and I only wanted to spend $2,500 it was always a
bit more [A] than I wanted to spend on a guitar [F] this [C]
[Bb] [F] [D] is my [Bb] signature model and
the first Jazzmaster I got [G] didn't have the normal Jazzmaster bridge it [A] had like
[Bb] sort of like you know this [D] kind of tune-o-matic bridge so I [Fm] always got used
to that [F] so I always changed the [Bb] bridge if I bought one and then I got into like
jumbo frets [Eb] too [Bb] so I'd always put jumbo frets on the guitar and [F]
[C] I also have the
[Bb] action super high which you know it's really high up here [F] and stuff and
everybody thinks I'm [C] playing slide or something or [Bb] like when I get the guitar
set up they're like oh we can fix [Gm] that action for you if you want my motto is
it's never [A] too high only too low
[G] [A] my friend [G] bought a [B] 59 Jazzmaster that had
been refinished by [Dm] Fender and like this orange sparkle and like 64 or something
so it still had the [D] metal pick guard but [Bb] had like the older logo on it but I
thought that looked really cool with the sparkle and the matching head socks [Dm] when
I got more money I painted some of my guitars with sparkles I always liked you
know the metal flight the local [F] and I always purples my favorite color [C] anybody
who knows me so [Dm] had to be purple and I [C] like the pick guard from you know 58 and
59 they [F] hadn't really [A] used much since then so I [G] thought I'd bring that [A] back
because I like that it makes it sound slightly different no I never use this
a lot I [Dm] go between two [D] or I'll put a [Bb] pencil eraser and hold it down yeah I
like [D] the old pickups [Dm] I mean a lot of the new ones seem a bit too loud usually
like old ones are never that loud [Bb] and so for [D] all my amp settings stuff a [Bb] lot of
new ones are too loud [D] yeah I don't have any finish [G] really on the neck try to
[C] stimulate that more enough [A] yeah not for free [C] but yeah [Dm] I had a few stolen
[Am] actually the first prototype [Dm] of this was also stolen and a Rory Gallagher strat [D] I
got so I like the law and [F] yeah three old ones so I don't have [Fm] quite a stockpile
[Bb] maybe I'll just [Dm] stockpile this my own it's already painted well
[Bb] [F] [Bb] [Dm]
