INTERVIEW - Jeff Coffey Explains His Chicago Exit chords

Jeff Coffey tells us the main reason why he left the band Chicago.
I'm Jon Bowden from Rock History Music.
[D] Of course, the [A] main singer of Chicago way back when was Peter Cetera.
He [E] left in the 80s.
[G] Jason Schaef replaced him and then Jeff replaced Jason in 2016.
[D] But Coffey left Chicago in the beginning of this year, [A] 2018.
I was [E] always impressed by his [Em] playing.
No one likes shuffles in [G] music, especially when it comes to a lead singer.
But as [D] much as I like Peter, I got to really like Jason in the [A] 80s and 90s.
And then [G] when he [C] left, I was surprised at how quickly I really appreciated
[G] Jeff Coffey on bass [A] and him as a singer.
[C] In the next few weeks, we're going to have different segments [Em] of us talking [Dm] to Jeff.
I [A] talked to him today via Skype [D] and I [C] asked him,
what's the main reason you left the band?
[Bm] Are all the rumors true?
Was it just the touring [A] thing?
And was it a whirlwind being in Chicago for [D] the time you were [Dm] there?
Well, yeah.
I mean, [G] in a sense, it was.
I was very familiar with the road because I had done a lot of traveling in my past.
So I've done a lot of road work and nowhere near as comfortable as Chicago travels.
But it was different in the sense that I had family [C] now, [D] kids and stuff.
[A] [G]
When I got on, they were averaging 80, 90 [D] shows a year.
Touring machine.
They never stop.
But again, I [G] came in, it was a month after the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
which boosted the band's profile, more [D] shows.
Then over the holidays of that same year, the [Em] documentary came out.
And again, it was on CNN, elevated the band's profile, [D] more shows.
We finished out with 123 [G] shows, something [Cm] like that, the last year.
So, you know, more than what I [A] initially [C]
was informed of.
And, you know, it's 270 days gone.
So that was a big change for me and my family.
[Bm]
[D] So those kinds of things come to play.
Leaving Chicago was not [E] an easy [D] decision.
It was a big decision [G] and there were factors involved.
I [Em] would [G] say that everything stemmed from that.
I would say, you know, [D] it was [Cm] extremely extensive touring.
[A] You're basically sequestered and you have to be where they want you [G] to be.
And it's pretty manning.
It's a touring machine, you know.
So, yeah, it all [C] stemmed from that.
That was the main [G] issue.

[D] [Em] [D] That was the music he grew up with, or [G] at least he loved, in the [C] 80s.
